Salt air, voltage dips and dust: what Nellore does to an AC

Three local factors shorten an AC's life here: salt on the coastal side, the evening supply in summer, and road dust. What each does and what protects the unit.

Three things in Nellore wear an AC out faster than the manual assumes: salt in the air if you live on the coastal side, the evening voltage in summer, and dust near the roads. None of them is dramatic. They work slowly, and the first you notice is a unit that cools less each year, needs gas it did not need before, or dies one evening in May with a humming outdoor unit. Each has a cheap defence if you start early.

Salt air on the coastal side

Muthukur, Krishnapatnam, Venkatachalam, and the eastern side of Nellore city get a steady sea breeze, and with it salt. On an outdoor unit that means:

  • Fin corrosion. The aluminium fins on the condenser coil go white and powdery, then crumble. A coil with half its fins gone cannot dump heat, and the unit cools poorly and runs hot.
  • Copper pitting. Where aluminium and copper meet, salt sets up a reaction that eats the copper tubes until a pinhole opens and the gas leaks. This is the usual story behind a coastal AC that "needs gas every year".
  • Electrical contacts. The contactor, the terminal block and the capacitor terminals corrode, leading to a compressor that hums and will not start, or a unit that trips.
  • Fan motor and casing. Bearings seize and screws rust through, so the fan wobbles and vibrates the joints.

What helps: rinse the outdoor coil gently with plain water — AC off at the MCB, hose from the outside, no pressure washer — every few weeks in the dry season, and have it washed through at each service. If you are buying, ask for a corrosion-resistant coated condenser (brands sell these under names like blue fin or gold fin); they cost a little more and last noticeably longer by the sea. Site the unit on the side of the house away from the direct breeze where you can. Do not wrap it in plastic; that traps salt and moisture against the metal.

The evening supply in summer

From March to June, as every AC in the street starts around 7 pm, the voltage sags. Then there are cuts, and when the supply returns it often comes back with a spike. An AC sees three problems from this:

  • Failed starts. A compressor needs full voltage to start. On a sagging supply it hums, draws heavy current, trips its thermal cut-out, waits, and tries again. Each failed start heats the windings and stresses the capacitor.
  • Capacitor death. The start and run capacitor in the outdoor unit is the part that goes first, and a summer of low-voltage starts is how it goes. It is a small part at MRP, but a unit with a dead capacitor does not cool.
  • Board damage. The spike when power returns after a cut is what takes out PCBs on both inverter and non-inverter units.

What helps: a stabiliser rated for your unit — for a 1.5-ton split usually the 4 kVA class; check the current on the AC's nameplate — with a time-delay feature so the compressor does not restart the instant power returns. If your inverter AC's manual quotes a wide operating range you may be tempted to skip it; the dip is covered, the spike is not. Also: do not switch the AC back on within three minutes of it stopping. Give the pressures time to equalise. Many units enforce this delay themselves; if yours does not, do it by hand.

If your AC only misbehaves in the evenings, say so when you book. It points to voltage, and a diagnosis visit (₹350) that starts there saves chasing a compressor fault that is not one.

Dust near the roads

Anywhere near the highway, the trunk road, a construction site or open ground, fine dust arrives all day. It collects on the indoor filters first, then gets past them onto the coil, and on the outdoor unit it mats the fins into felt.

  • Choked filters cut airflow, which makes the indoor coil too cold, which makes it ice up, which looks exactly like low gas.
  • A dusty indoor coil holds moisture in the monsoon and grows the smell you notice in October.
  • A matted outdoor coil makes the unit run hot and cool less.

What helps: clean the filters every three to four weeks in summer rather than every three months, keep the window on the dusty side shut while the AC is on, and have both coils washed at the service (₹399). If the outdoor unit is at ground level on the road side, a low screen a metre away that stops dust without blocking air is worth more than it looks.

The combined effect

A unit by the sea, on the road, running through summer evenings without a stabiliser, takes all three at once. It will be the one that is "always giving trouble". Two services a year, monthly filters, a stabiliser and a rinse of the outdoor coil is the whole defence, and it costs a fraction of what the first compressor does.

Questions people ask

Do I need a stabiliser for an inverter AC?
Most inverter ACs list a wide operating voltage range in the manual and will run through a dip without one. But a stabiliser also catches the spike when power returns after a cut, and that spike is what kills boards and compressors. For the price of one against the price of a PCB, it is still worth having in Nellore.
How do I know if salt air is damaging my outdoor unit?
Look at the fins. A white, powdery or flaky deposit on the aluminium, fins that crumble when touched, or green-blue staining on the copper bends means corrosion has started. Rust on the casing screws and the fan guard is an early sign too. Rinse the coil with plain water regularly and have it checked at each service.
How often should I clean filters near a main road?
Every three to four weeks in summer, and after any nearby construction or a dust storm. Hold the filter up to the light; if you cannot see through it, it is overdue. A choked filter starves the coil of air, cuts cooling and is the commonest reason for ice on the pipe.
