Ceiling fan slow, noisy or wobbling? Capacitor, bearings or regulator
How to tell a weak capacitor from dry bearings from a tired regulator by how the fan behaves, what you can safely clean and tighten, and what a repair costs.

A ceiling fan that runs slow, rattles or wobbles is almost always one of four things: a tired capacitor, dry or worn bearings, a regulator that is not delivering full voltage, or something mechanical — a loose screw, a bent blade, a dirty one. The way the fan behaves tells you which, and two of the four you can sort out yourself.
In Nellore the fan runs ten or eleven months a year and, from March to June, nearly round the clock. That is a lot of hours, and it is why capacitors and bearings give up earlier here than the box suggests.
Slow at full speed
Needs a push to start, or starts slowly and never reaches proper speed. Capacitor. It is a small cylinder inside the canopy or motor housing, and it loses capacity with heat and age. A fan that runs all summer in a 40°C room is hard on it. Replacement cures it; the part is cheap and charged at MRP.
Starts fine but is slow on every setting, and other fans in the house are fine. Regulator. Old resistance-type regulators drop voltage and heat up; electronic ones fail so that speed five delivers less than it should. A quick test: if the fan is on a plug-in socket or the technician can bypass the regulator, it runs at full speed.
Slow in the evening, normal by day, in every room. Supply voltage. That is the local grid in summer, not the fan. A stabiliser does not help fans; only the supply improving does.
Slow, hums, motor housing hot to touch after half an hour. Bearings dragging or a winding going. This is the one that should not wait; a motor that runs hot eventually burns out.
Noisy
- Click or tick once per rotation. A loose blade screw, the canopy touching the rod, or a blade brushing a wire. Switch off, let it stop fully, tighten blade screws and check the canopy sits clear.
- Rattle that changes with speed. The capacitor casing or a loose part in the canopy. Technician job.
- Grinding or a dry whine. Bearings. Dust from a main-road locality and salt air near the coast get into them; the fix is to open the motor, clean and re-grease or replace the bearings.
- Hum at low speeds with an electronic regulator. Common and mostly harmless; some motors and regulators simply do not get along at low settings.
Wobbling
Nine times out of ten it is the blades. Dust builds unevenly — one blade carrying a thick layer is out of balance. A blade knocked by a ladder or cricket ball is bent a few degrees. Blade screws loosen over thousands of hours of vibration. Check in that order: clean, tighten, then sight along the blades from below to see whether one sits lower than the rest.
If the blades are fine and it still wobbles, look at the down-rod clamp and the hook in the ceiling. A loose clamp or a hook that has worked loose in old concrete is a proper safety problem — stop using the fan until it is fixed.
What you can do yourself
Switch off at the wall and the MCB for that room first. Then:
- Wipe the blades monthly in dusty localities, every two months elsewhere. A damp cloth is enough.
- Tighten the blade-to-arm and arm-to-motor screws.
- Check the canopy is seated and not rubbing.
- Use a balancing clip (a few rupees at any fan shop) on the light blade if a clean fan still wobbles.
Do not open the motor, do not touch the capacitor, and do not hang from the fan to test the hook. The capacitor can hold a charge with the power off, and the motor windings are not a user-serviceable part.
Repair or replace
A new capacitor, new bearings or a regulator swap are all worth doing on a fan with a sound motor. Two things tip it the other way: a burnt winding — the motor smells, hums loudly, gets very hot and will not turn even with a push — and a fan old enough that its second or third repair is near the cost of a new one.
If you are replacing, a BLDC fan draws a fraction of the power of a conventional one at the same airflow. In a house where three or four fans run most of the day for most of the year, the saving on the bill is real, and BLDC fans also hold their speed better when voltage dips.

Parts — capacitor, bearings, regulator — are charged at MRP and shown before fitting. If the motor needs rewinding the technician will tell you what that involves before taking the fan down, so you can decide between rewinding and a new fan.
When to call
A fan that needs a push, that runs hot, that grinds, or that wobbles after cleaning and tightening. A hook or clamp that moves when the fan is off. Any fan that sparks or trips the MCB — switch it off at the MCB and leave it off until someone has looked.
Questions people ask
- My fan needs a push to start. What is wrong?
- That is the capacitor. It gives the motor the kick it needs to start turning and to run at full speed; as it weakens, the fan starts reluctantly and runs slow even at speed five. Replacing it is a quick job, but the capacitor holds a charge even with the power off, so leave the swap to the technician.
- Why is the fan slower in the evening than in the morning?
- Evening voltage dips, common in Nellore from April onwards, reduce fan speed noticeably. If the fan is fine at noon and sluggish at 8 pm across every room, it is the supply, not the fan. If only one fan slows, or it is slow all day, look at the capacitor or regulator.
- Is a wobbling fan dangerous?
- A small wobble is normal. A wobble that has grown, or that comes with a clicking sound, usually means a loose blade screw, a bent blade or a loose down-rod clamp, and those can fail. Switch it off, let it stop, and check the blade screws and canopy before using it again.
