Why a ductless chimney underperforms in an Indian kitchen
A ductless chimney filters air and puts it back in the room. With daily tempering and frying, that leaves the heat, the steam and eventually the smell behind.

A ductless chimney — recirculating, in the manuals — sucks air through a filter, passes it over a carbon filter to absorb odour, and blows it back into the kitchen. A ducted chimney takes that air out of the house entirely. For the kind of cooking done in most homes here, that difference is the whole story: the ductless design removes some grease and some smell, but the heat, the steam and the fine oil mist that carbon cannot hold all stay in the room.
If you have any route to an outside wall, duct it. Ductless is a fallback for flats where the kitchen has no external wall within reach, not an equal choice.
What the carbon filter can and cannot do
Activated carbon absorbs odour molecules until its surface is full, then it stops. Nothing warns you when that happens; the chimney sounds the same, the light works, and the smell simply comes back.
With daily tempering, deep frying and fish, that saturation arrives faster than the manual's estimate. Budget on replacing carbon filters roughly twice a year, and treat that as a running cost. A saturated filter also restricts airflow, so suction falls at the same time as the odour returns — which is why people conclude the motor has failed when the filter is the whole problem.
Heat and humidity stay in the kitchen
This is the part that gets underestimated in Nellore. From March to June the kitchen is already the hottest room in the house. A ductless chimney takes hot air off the hob and returns it a metre away, slightly cleaner and just as hot. Whoever is cooking feels every bit of it.
Steam is the same story. Boiling, pressure cooking and simmering put a lot of moisture into the air, and in a district with high humidity most of the year that moisture has nowhere to go. It condenses on the cabinet fronts and on the wall behind the hob, and over time that shows up as swollen cabinet edges, peeling laminate and mould in the corners of the kitchen.
The grease has to land somewhere
A ducted chimney sends whatever the filters miss out through the pipe. A ductless one recirculates it. Fine oil mist that passes the filter settles on the ceiling above the hob, the wall tiles, the cabinet handles and the top of the fridge. Kitchens with recirculating chimneys generally need more frequent deep cleaning of everything around the hob, not less.
Where ductless still makes sense
- The kitchen is internal, with no external wall within a reasonable duct run.
- Building or society rules do not allow a wall penetration or an outlet on that face.
- It is a rented flat and you do not want to cut a hole you will have to make good later.
- Cooking is genuinely light — mostly boiling and mild curries, little frying.
In those cases, get the largest suction rating that fits, keep the carbon filters fresh, and open a window while frying. Airflow into the kitchen matters even more with a recirculating unit.
Getting the most out of one you already have
- Replace carbon filters on a calendar reminder rather than waiting for the smell.
- Wash the grease filters every two to four weeks — with no duct, a clogged grease filter pushes more oil straight through the carbon and shortens its life.
- Empty the oil collector cup every two to three weeks.
- Run the chimney for several minutes after cooking ends, not just during.
- Keep a window or the kitchen door open while frying, so the room can actually exchange air.
- Deep clean the motor and blower twice a year; recirculating units load the wheel just as fast.
If you want to convert
Check three things before spending anything: how far the nearest external wall is, how many bends a duct would need to reach it, and whether the model is convertible. Under three metres with one or two bends is a good outcome. A run any longer than that gives back much of what ducting was supposed to win.

Questions people ask
- Is a ductless chimney completely useless?
- No, but it is a compromise. It catches oil droplets and, while the carbon filter is fresh, absorbs a good part of the smell. What it cannot do is remove heat and steam from the kitchen, because the air goes straight back into the room it came from.
- How often do carbon filters need replacing in a ductless chimney?
- With daily Indian cooking, plan on roughly every six months, sometimes sooner. A saturated carbon filter stops absorbing smell and starts restricting airflow, so a chimney that seemed fine in month two can feel useless in month eight with nothing else wrong.
- Can a ductless chimney be converted to ducted later?
- Often yes, if there is a route to an outside wall within a few metres. Many models are sold as convertible and only need the carbon filter removed and a duct fitted. Have the wall, the run and the number of bends checked before you buy anything on that assumption.
