Safe microwave checks before calling, and the one part never to open

Ten minutes of safe checks — socket, door, settings, tray, a water test — sort out many microwave complaints. And one firm rule: never take the outer cover off.

Before you book anyone, ten minutes of safe checks will either fix the problem or tell you exactly what to say when you call. Everything below is done from the front of the oven — the door, the tray, the controls and the plug. Nothing below asks you to remove a screw, and we will be blunt about why at the end.

Check 1: power

  • Is there power at the socket? Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same socket.
  • Is the MCB for the kitchen circuit on? Microwaves draw 1,200 to 1,500 watts, more for convection; a weak or shared circuit can trip.
  • Is the plug fully in? Kitchen plugs get knocked. Is the plug or socket warm or discoloured? If so, stop using it and have the socket looked at — that is an electrician job, not a microwave one.
  • Is it on an extension board? Take it off one. Thin extension cords heat up and drop voltage under a microwave's load.

If the socket is live and the oven is completely dead, the internal fuse has most likely gone. In Nellore that often happens on the surge when supply returns after a cut. The fuse is behind the cover, so stop here and book a Not Starting diagnosis (₹350).

Check 2: the door

The oven will not start, or will stop, if the door is not fully closed. Microwaves have two or three interlock switches on the latch, and they are strict by design. Open and close it firmly until the latch clicks. Look at the latch hooks on the door edge — cracked or broken hooks mean a door repair. Check nothing is caught in the seal: a grain of rice in the door gasket is enough.

Never tape, prop or bypass a door that does not latch. The interlocks exist so the oven cannot run open.

Check 3: settings

  • Child lock. Most ovens lock the panel if you hold a key for a few seconds, and it is easy to do by accident while wiping. The manual or a search for your model tells you the unlock key.
  • Demo or showroom mode. Some models have a mode where the display works but the oven does not heat. Again, the manual.
  • Power level. If someone set 10 percent for defrosting, your next reheat will be feeble. Reset to high.
  • Clock and timer. A few models will not start until the clock is set after a power cut.

Check 4: the tray and roller ring

Lift out the glass tray and the plastic roller ring. Clean anything under them. Refit the ring, then sit the tray on the coupler in the centre so it engages. A tray not seated properly does not turn and the food heats unevenly, which people often report as "not heating".

Check 5: the water test

Put a cup of about 250 ml of tap water in the centre and run it on high for one minute. Hot, nearly too hot to hold: the oven is heating normally and the problem is elsewhere. Lukewarm: heating is weak, usually a tired magnetron, and evening voltage dips make it worse. Cold: no heating at all. Weak or cold is a Not Heating diagnosis, ₹399, which covers testing the magnetron, capacitor and diode.

Check 6: look, smell, listen

Open the door and look at the cavity. Brown or black marks on the small mica panel on the side wall mean the waveguide cover has burnt and will spark. Chips or rust on the walls, the same. A burning smell with no food inside, a hum that is much louder than it used to be, a grinding from under the tray — each of these is a clear description for the technician and helps them arrive with the right parts.

The part you never open

Everything above is outside the cover. Here is why it stays that way.

Behind the outer casing of every microwave is a high-voltage capacitor. It stores a few thousand volts to drive the magnetron, and it can hold that charge for a long time after the oven is unplugged. There is no light on it and no way to tell by looking. People have been killed by it. A technician discharges it deliberately, with a tool, before touching anything else.

Next to it is the magnetron. It is not a user part: it can hold a charge, it has a strong magnet, and its pink ceramic insulator contains beryllium oxide, which is hazardous if the ceramic is broken. It is also the most expensive part in the oven and easy to damage by handling.

So the rule is plain: switch off at the socket, unplug, and do nothing that needs a screwdriver. A dead microwave in the kitchen is an inconvenience; a charged capacitor is not.

When to call, and what to say

Call if: the water test is lukewarm or cold; the oven is dead with a live socket; it sparks with no metal inside; the door does not latch; the tray will not turn when seated; or the noise has changed. Tell the technician which check you did and what you found. It makes the visit shorter and the diagnosis surer.

Questions people ask

Why is it so dangerous to open a microwave when other appliances are fine to look inside?
Because of the high-voltage capacitor. It stores a charge of a few thousand volts to feed the magnetron, and it can keep that charge long after the plug is pulled. Touching its terminals can be fatal. Technicians discharge it deliberately before touching anything. There is no home repair worth that risk.
The microwave worked yesterday and is dead today after a power cut. What should I try?
Check the socket with a lamp or phone charger, and the MCB. If the socket is live, the oven has almost certainly blown its internal fuse on the surge when power returned. That is inside the cover, so it is a technician job, and the fuse should be replaced only after checking why it blew.
How do I test whether my microwave is heating properly?
Put a cup of tap water — about 250 ml — in the centre and run it on high for one minute. It should be hot to the touch, close to too hot to hold. If it is barely warm, the heating side is weak. If it is cold, it is not heating at all. Either way, that is a Not Heating job.
