Hard borewell water in Nellore: scale on taps, showers and geysers
White crust on taps, a shower that sprays sideways, a geyser that slows every year: what hard water does to each fitting, what vinegar fixes, what needs more.

Most of Nellore district outside the municipal supply runs on borewell water, and most of that is hard: it carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that come out of solution whenever the water is heated or dries. That is the white crust on the spout, the shower head that sprays sideways, the glass shower door that never looks clean, and the geyser that takes longer every winter. None of it is dangerous. All of it shortens the life of your plumbing and costs money in parts and power.
Here is what hard water does to each fitting, what you can clean yourself, and what actually reduces it.
Taps and aerators
The mesh aerator at the tip of a tap collects scale first. Flow drops, the stream goes sideways, and people assume the pressure has fallen. Unscrew the aerator (by hand or with a cloth and pliers), soak it overnight in diluted white vinegar, brush, rinse and refit. Do the same on the outside of chrome taps with a cloth soaked in vinegar left on the crust for an hour; do not scrub chrome with steel wool or a hard scrubber.
Inside the tap, scale roughens the brass seat a washer presses on, and a rough seat chews through new washers. That is why a washer "does not last" in a hard-water home. A technician can re-face the seat; on a cheap tap, replacement is often the better answer. Quarter-turn ceramic cartridges score and drip when grit and scale get between the discs.
Showers
Shower heads scale from the holes inwards. Unscrew it, soak in vinegar, poke the holes with a pin, rinse. If the head is fixed, tie a bag of vinegar over it for a few hours. Mixer cartridges behind the wall scale too; when hot and cold stop blending properly or the flow is a trickle from a full tank, that is the cartridge, and it is a plumber's job.
Glass doors and tiles: a vinegar-and-water spray, left a few minutes, then a squeegee. Squeegee after every shower and the crust never builds.
Geysers
The geyser suffers most because scale precipitates fastest on a hot surface. It coats the element, so the element must run hotter and longer to heat the same water; it settles as sediment in the bottom of the tank; and it shortens the anode rod's life. Signs: heating takes longer than it did, the geyser rumbles or pops as it heats, hot water carries white flakes, the pressure relief valve drips more.
What helps: an annual flush and element check, twice a year in the hardest localities; a geyser sized so it is not running flat out all winter; and, if you are replacing, a glass-lined tank and a magnesium anode that is actually checked at each service. Switching the geyser off at the MCB when not in use also reduces the hours the element sits hot in hard water. Do not open the geyser yourself — the element and thermostat are behind the cover with live terminals and a pressure tank; that is a service visit.
Pipes, flush tanks and washing machines
Scale narrows GI pipes over decades and, less severely, CPVC. A home where pressure has fallen slowly for years usually has scaled runs. A softener is a real piece of plumbing: it goes on the line between the sump or bore and the overhead tank, needs a drain for its regeneration water, and needs the salt topped up. Softened water is fine for bathing and washing; keep the RO for drinking and cooking. Sizing it to the household and the hardness of your particular bore is the plumber's job, and it is worth testing the water first rather than guessing.
Salt air on top of hard water
On the coastal side — Muthukur, Krishnapatnam, the eastern edge of the city — hard water inside the fitting meets salt air outside it. Chrome pits, brass goes green, outdoor taps seize. Stainless or good-quality brass fittings last longer there than zinc-bodied cheap ones, and an outdoor tap should be turned fully open and closed once a month so it does not seize.
When to call
A tap that needs a washer every few months; a mixer that will not blend or trickles from a full tank; a geyser that rumbles, takes much longer, or has not been flushed in two years; pressure that has fallen slowly over years; and any plan to fit a softener. The cleaning — aerators, shower heads, chrome, glass — is yours, and done monthly it stops most of the rest.
Questions people ask
- Is the white crust on my taps harmful?
- It is calcium and magnesium carbonate left behind when hard water dries — the same thing as the crust in a kettle. It is not harmful to touch; it is a problem because it blocks aerators and shower holes, roughens tap seats so washers fail, and insulates geyser elements so they take longer and burn out. Clean it off, and address the water if it keeps returning fast.
- Will a water softener stop scale completely?
- A whole-house softener swaps the calcium for sodium and stops most scale in the pipes, geyser and fittings. It needs salt topping up and periodic servicing, and the softened water is not what you want in the kitchen for drinking — keep the RO for that. Smaller in-line cartridge or magnetic devices reduce scale at best; treat their claims cautiously.
- How often should a geyser be flushed on borewell water?
- Once a year at minimum, and twice a year in localities where the scale on taps comes back within weeks. The technician drains the tank, flushes the sediment, checks the element and the anode rod. An unflushed geyser on hard water loses heating speed, gets noisy, and eventually the element fails inside a crust of scale.
