Plumbing safety: gas geyser lines, electrics near water, never-dos
The plumbing jobs that can hurt you: gas geyser lines, motors and geysers on wet walls, pressure pipes, drain acid. What to switch off and what to leave sealed.

Most plumbing is safe to poke at. A washer, a floor trap, a float valve — the worst outcome is a wet floor. A few jobs are different, because they put water next to electricity or gas, or involve pressure or chemicals, and those are where people get hurt. This is the short list: what is genuinely dangerous in home plumbing, what to switch off or close before you go near it, and what to leave sealed.
Gas geysers
A gas geyser burns LPG in the bathroom and makes hot water instantly. Two things can go wrong: a gas leak, and the burner using up the air in a closed room. Both are prevented by the same habits.
- Ventilation is not optional. The geyser must be in a room with a permanent opening to outside, or, better, mounted outside the bathroom with only the hot water piped in. A gas geyser in a closed, windowless bathroom is the most dangerous thing in home plumbing; the fumes can kill in a closed room, and they have no smell to warn you.
- The gas line. The cylinder outside or in a ventilated spot, the hose ISI-marked and replaced when it hardens or cracks, the regulator fitted properly. Close the cylinder valve when the geyser is idle for long and whenever you leave the house for days. Test joints with soap water, never a flame.
- Do not touch the geyser's own gas valve, burner or inlet fitting. A yellow flame, a flame that lifts off the burner, or a geyser that shuts itself down is a service call.
- If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off (switches spark), open the door and window, close the cylinder valve, leave the room, and call.

Electric geysers and wet walls
An electric geyser is a heating element in a tank of water on a wet bathroom wall. It relies on its earth and, ideally, an RCCB on the board.
- Switch off at the MCB before touching anything on it — not just the wall switch.
- Never switch it on empty or with air in the line after the tank ran dry. Run the hot tap until water flows steadily first.
- Do not open the cover. The element, thermostat and terminals are inside. The pressure relief valve on the inlet is not a "leak" to be plugged — if it drips constantly, that is a service call, not a job for tape.
- A tingle from a tap while the geyser is on means a failed earth or element. MCB off, stop using it, and get the earth and the geyser checked.
Water motors and pump rooms
The starter, its socket and the terminal box live in the dampest place in the house.
- Dry hands, dry feet, footwear before you touch the starter. Move the switch to a dry wall if it sits by the sump.
- MCB off before touching the motor, control box, float switch or cable — even to "just look".
- Do not open the capacitor or the terminal box. A capacitor holds a charge after the supply is off.
- A tingle from the motor body or a pipe near it means a failed earth. Switch off at the MCB and do not use it until an electrician has checked.
- Cables in the sump or down the bore should be proper submersible cable with proper joint kits, not insulation tape under water.
Pipes under pressure
Close the valve and drain the line before undoing any fitting. Undoing a union on a live line gives you a jet of water across the room — hot water, if the geyser is on that line. Do not keep tightening a joint that still weeps; brass cracks and then you have a flood. Do not stand on the basin or the toilet to reach a pipe; both break, and the fall is onto tile.
Drain acid and chemicals
Concentrated acid sold loose as "drain cleaner" burns skin, heats and weakens PVC, and spits back when it meets standing water. Mixed with bleach or other cleaners it releases toxic fumes in a small bathroom. Hot water, a plunger and a snake clear household blocks; what they cannot clear needs a machine. If someone has already poured acid in, tell the plumber before they open the trap.
Terraces, tanks and ladders
Tank cleaning and valve work happen on the terrace, often in the heat or the rain. Never climb a wet ladder alone; never lean into a tank you could fall into without someone there; do not work on the terrace in lightning. In summer, do the tank early in the morning.
What never to do, in one list
- Never switch an empty geyser on.
- Never open a geyser cover, a motor terminal box or a capacitor.
- Never touch the gas side of a gas geyser beyond the cylinder hose.
- Never run a gas geyser in a closed bathroom.
- Never touch the motor starter with wet hands or standing in water.
- Never undo a fitting with pressure on the line.
- Never pour concentrated acid into a drain.
- Never tape over a pressure relief valve.
When to call
Any tingle, any gas smell, any geyser or motor that trips its MCB, any pressure relief valve that runs, any gas geyser in a closed room, and any job on this page you were about to do yourself. The visit is cheap against what these cost when they go wrong.
Questions people ask
- Can I change the gas geyser's cylinder hose myself?
- Replacing the rubber hose between the regulator and the geyser with a new ISI-marked hose, with the cylinder valve closed, is within reach of a careful person — but the geyser's own gas inlet, its valve and its burner are not. Soap-water test every joint after, and never use a flame to check. If you smell gas with everything closed, leave the room ventilated and call.
- Is it safe to use the water motor switch with wet hands?
- No. A motor starter or socket in a damp pump room, operated with wet hands or while standing in water, is exactly how plumbing electrocutes people. Dry hands, dry floor, footwear, and ideally a switch moved to a dry wall. If the motor's body ever gives a tingle, switch off at the MCB and do not use it until the earth is checked.
- Which plumbing jobs should I never attempt myself?
- Anything on the gas side of a gas geyser beyond the hose; anything inside the electric geyser's cover; opening a motor's terminal box or capacitor; working on a pipe with pressure still on; pouring concentrated acid into a drain; and climbing a wet terrace alone in rain. Each has a simple rule — switch off, close the valve, or do not — and each has hurt people who skipped it.
