Installing a water purifier: pressure, drain, power and where to put it
Where an RO goes and how it is plumbed decides half its faults. Inlet pressure, drain line, socket, wall or under-sink, and what a good installation leaves you.

A purifier that is installed well — right pressure at the inlet, a drain line that falls away cleanly, a dry socket, a wall that holds it level — runs for years with nothing but filter changes. One hung where it fitted, fed from a line that runs dry every evening, with its reject tube pushed into a sink waste and the adapter on a damp cabinet floor, produces leaks and flow complaints that get blamed on the unit. Here is what to get right on day one, and what to ask for if yours was not.
Three things it needs within reach
A cold water take-off. A small inlet valve tapped into the kitchen cold line, with its own quarter-turn tap so the purifier can be isolated without shutting the kitchen. Not the hot line, and not the geyser outlet.
A drain for the reject line. The reject tube should run to the sink waste, a floor drain, or a collection bucket, and it should fall away from the unit, not rise. A reject tube that loops upward or is pushed into a sink waste with no air gap can back up into the purifier — the commonest reason for a "leak" that turns out to be drain water.
A dry socket. A proper three-pin socket at counter height or above, not an extension board under the sink. The adapter should sit where a leak or a flooded kitchen cannot reach it.
Inlet pressure: too little and too much
An RO's booster pump is designed around ordinary overhead-tank or municipal pressure. The two failures are at the extremes:
- Too little. A tank that runs dry every evening, or a very low tank on the same floor, leaves the pump sucking air. It chatters, fills slowly, and wears early. The fix is at the tank or with a float switch on the pump, not in the purifier.
- Too much. A line fed directly by a pressure motor or a high overhead tank on a tall building can exceed what push-fit joints and housings were meant for. Joints weep, housings crack. A small pressure-reducing valve on the inlet solves it.
Where to put it
- Above or beside the sink, on the wall. The default for good reason: water, drain and socket are all there, filters are reachable, and spills go into the sink. Mount it level, at a height where the tap clears a bottle or a vessel.
- Under the sink. Cleaner-looking, but check the cabinet is dry, the adapter is off the floor, and the filters can be reached without dismantling the cabinet. A drip tray is cheap insurance.
- Not above the hob or next to a window that gets afternoon sun. Heat speeds growth in the storage tank and cooks the plastic. Nellore summer afternoons through a west-facing window are enough to warm a tank noticeably.
- On a wall that can take the weight. A full tank plus the unit is heavy. Partition walls need a backing board or a stud.
In coastal homes — Muthukur, Krishnapatnam, the eastern edge of town — salt air reaches indoor metal fittings too. Ask for the inlet tap and any metal take-off to be brass or stainless, not plated steel, and for the socket to be kept away from the window side.
The drain line in detail
It causes more trouble than any other part of the installation.
- It should run downhill the whole way, with no loop above the unit.
- If it goes into the sink waste, it should enter above the trap through a proper drain saddle, with an air gap, so waste water cannot siphon back.
- If it goes to a bucket, the bucket needs emptying before it fills, or the line backs up.
A reject line run to a drum for mopping and flushing is a good choice here and costs nothing beyond the drum.
Power and voltage
The adapter is the most voltage-sensitive part of the unit. Evening dips in a Nellore summer are hard on it; a stable socket on a lightly loaded circuit helps, and an inverter runs it without trouble if you want it on backup. Do not share a board with a mixer or a microwave. Switch off at the socket before opening any housing — always.
What a proper installation visit should leave behind
- The inlet tapped in with its own isolation valve, no weeping.
- The unit level and firmly on the wall, the tank filled and drained once to flush the new filters, and drained a second time if the water tastes of carbon.
- The reject line running clean to the drain or drum, with an air gap.
- A TDS reading of the inlet and of the output, written down for you. That is your baseline; every future service compares against it.
- The TDS controller set for your water, not left at the factory position.
Keep that TDS note. A year from now it is how you and the technician will know whether the membrane is ageing or the water has changed.
If your installation was not like this
The fixes are small and worth doing at the next service: a drain saddle and air gap for a reject line that backs up, a backing board for a sagging mount, a pressure reducer on a motor-fed line, the adapter moved off a wet cabinet floor. None of it is a reason to replace the unit; it is a reason to ask when you book.
Questions people ask
- Can the purifier run straight off the overhead tank line?
- Usually yes — the booster pump in an RO is designed for normal tank or mains pressure. The trouble is when the tank runs empty every evening, which makes the pump suck air and chatter. A direct line from a pressure motor is the opposite problem and can blow push-fit joints; if the supply is pumped, say so at installation.
- Does it have to go above the kitchen sink?
- No, but it needs three things within reach: a cold water take-off, a drain for the reject line, and a socket that stays dry. Above or beside the sink gives all three easily. Under the sink works for under-counter models and hides the unit, but check the cabinet is dry and the adapter is off the floor.
- My wall is a thin partition. Is it safe to mount there?
- A full tank makes the unit heavy. On a plywood or gypsum partition, the technician needs to find a stud or use a backing board; on brick or concrete, standard wall plugs are fine. A unit that has pulled away from the wall puts strain on every tube behind it and leaks follow.
