Hard water, detergent and scale: what Nellore water does to a machine

Why borewell water in Nellore scales the heater, dulls clothes and eats detergent, how to tell it is happening, and the monthly routine that keeps scale off.

Hard water is the single biggest reason washing machines in Nellore age faster than the same models elsewhere. Borewell supply across much of the district carries dissolved calcium and magnesium; when that water is heated in a front loader, or just left to dry on the drum and tub, it leaves scale. Scale on the heater element makes it work harder and eventually fail; scale on the drum roughens it and greys clothes; and the minerals use up detergent before it does any washing, which is why people on hard water keep adding more.

The fix is not complicated: a descale once a month, the right amount of the right detergent, and the inlet filter cleaned. It is the difference between a heater that lasts and one that needs replacing every few years.

What hard water actually does inside the machine

  • Heater element (front loaders and some top loaders). The hottest surface in the machine, so scale forms on it first and thickest. A coated heater heats slowly, the cycle runs long, and the element eventually burns out or trips the MCB. Heater faults are a large share of front-loader repairs in borewell homes.
  • Drum and tub. A chalky film that you can feel by hand. It traps detergent residue and grey lint, and dark clothes come out with white streaks.
  • Inlet valve and filter. Borewell water also carries grit. The small mesh at the hose end blocks, the machine fills slowly, and the "no water supply" error appears. The valve itself can stick partly open or closed.
  • Pump and drain. Scale plus detergent scum narrows the drain path, and a semi-automatic drain valve sticks.
  • Clothes. Stiff towels, faded colours, a dull look on whites. Not the machine's fault, but the machine gets the blame.

The monthly routine

  1. Empty drum, hottest cycle, descaler in. Use a washing machine descaler as the pack says, or two to three tablespoons of citric acid powder in the drum (not the drawer). Run the longest hot programme or the tub-clean cycle. Do not add clothes or detergent.
  2. Wipe the drum and gasket afterwards. The loosened scale and scum come off on a cloth.
  3. Wash the detergent drawer. Pull it out fully (press the tab) and scrub the softener channel; that is where the crust builds.
  4. Every three months, clean the inlet filter. Tap off, hose off, mesh out with pliers, rinse, refit. Check the tap-end washer at the same time.

Semi-automatic machines do not heat water, so the heater problem does not apply, but the wash tub still scales. Fill it with warm water, add citric acid, leave it for an hour, run a wash cycle empty and drain. Clean the lint filter after.

Detergent on hard water

  • Use the right type. Front loaders need low-foam "matic" detergent for front load. Top-loader matic powder foams more and is right for top loaders. Ordinary hand-wash bar or powder in a front loader produces foam that pushes water out of the drawer and leaves a slimy residue on the gasket.
  • A little more, not a lot more. Hard water needs slightly more than the pack's soft-water dose. Doubling it does not wash better; it leaves residue and feeds the mould you smell in the monsoon.
  • Liquid or powder. Either is fine. Liquid dissolves better in cold water, which matters for top loaders and semi-automatics that do not heat. Powder is usually cheaper per wash.
  • Softener. Optional. On hard water it helps towels; it also leaves more residue in the drawer, so clean the drawer more often if you use it.

Signs scale is winning

  • Wash cycle takes noticeably longer than it used to on the same programme.
  • Heater error code, or the MCB trips partway through a hot wash.
  • White marks or grey cast on dark clothes straight from the machine.
  • Drum surface feels rough or chalky.
  • Machine fills slowly even with the tap fully open and the tank full.

The first two are a repair: the heater is tested and, if scaled beyond saving, replaced at MRP with the labour on the rate card (a machine that trips the MCB or shows no life books under "fully dead", ₹350). The last three are a descale you can do today.

Is a softener or RO worth it for the machine?

A whole-house softener solves the problem at source and protects the geyser and taps as well; it is a bigger decision than the washing machine alone justifies. RO water is not meant for laundry in the quantity a machine uses. For most homes, a monthly descale and the right detergent are all that is needed; if your water is severely hard, a small inline softener cartridge on the machine's inlet line is a middle option worth asking a plumber about.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my water is hard enough to matter?
Look at the kitchen tap and the bathroom tiles. White crust around the tap mouth, a chalky film on the geyser outlet, and soap that does not lather easily all say the supply is hard. Most borewell supply in Nellore district is. Municipal water is usually softer but still worth a descale every couple of months.
Can I use ordinary salt or vinegar instead of a descaler?
Salt does nothing for scale. Citric acid is the useful household option: a few tablespoons in an empty hot cycle once a month. Vinegar works but is weaker and some manufacturers advise against it for the rubber parts. A purpose-made washing machine descaler is the simplest and is not expensive.
Does a front loader really use less detergent on hard water?
It uses less water, so it needs less detergent for the same concentration, and its heater helps the detergent work. But on hard water every machine needs a little more detergent than the pack suggests, because the minerals use some of it up before it reaches the clothes. Too much, though, brings its own problems.
