Termite and borer damage in furniture: what carpentry can save
Termites and powder-post borers destroy furniture from the inside. How to tell them apart, what a carpenter can rebuild, and why treatment has to come first.

Termite and borer damage is the one carpentry problem where the repair is the second job, not the first. If the insects are still active, a rebuilt shelf or a new door frame simply becomes their next meal. So the order is always: identify what you have, get it treated, then decide what carpentry is worth doing.
Telling them apart is straightforward once you know what to look for. Termites leave mud — thin earthy tunnels running up a wall, along a skirting, behind a wardrobe or across the back of a bed. Tap the timber and it sounds hollow; press it and a paper-thin surface caves in over a honeycomb of soil-packed galleries. After the first heavy rains of the season you may also find a scatter of small shed wings near a light or a window, which is the swarming stage. Powder-post borers leave something completely different: neat round pinholes, roughly the size of a pin or a matchstick head, with a small heap of fine flour-like powder underneath. No mud, just powder.
Where they get in, in a Nellore home
Termites come from the ground. The classic entry points here are wooden door frames set into masonry at floor level, furniture standing flush against an outer wall that stays damp through the monsoon, and anything stored on the floor in a store room. Cardboard cartons stacked against a wall are a termite hotel — they are cellulose, they hold damp, and they hide the mud tunnel that leads to your wardrobe.
Borers arrive in the timber. They lay in the sapwood of hardwoods and in some plywood, so a new piece of furniture can bring them into a clean house. Humidity keeps the cycle going; long damp spells from October to January are when the powder heaps get noticeably bigger.
What carpentry can save
Quite a lot, if the structure is still sound:
- Replacing an eaten rail, stile or shelf while keeping the rest of a solid wood piece.
- Splicing new timber into the lower part of a door frame where damage stops a foot off the floor.
- Cutting out and renewing the bottom shelf and back panel of a wardrobe.
- Re-gluing and re-pinning joints that opened up when the surrounding timber softened.
- Rebuilding drawer bottoms and runners.
- Refixing hardware into fresh timber where screws no longer bite.

What it cannot save
Be realistic about the rest. If a load-bearing member — a bed rail, a chair leg, a wardrobe stile, the head of a door frame — is hollow through its section, it is not repairable; it is replaceable. The same applies when a particle board or MDF carcass has been colonised, because there is nothing solid left to fix into. And no carpentry ends an infestation: replacing the visible damage while a colony is live just resets the clock.
Do the pest work first
If you have mud tunnels, active pinholes with fresh powder, or timber that gives way under a thumb, book pest control before any carpentry. Termite treatment is a separate service on the site and is the job that actually stops the problem; carpentry then rebuilds what was lost. Doing it the other way round is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
What you can check yourself, safely
Once a season, pull the wardrobe and the bed away from the wall and look at the backs and undersides — that is where damage runs for months unseen. Tap along the bottom rail of door frames with a knuckle and listen for hollowness. Look under fixed shelves for powder. Keep furniture a couple of centimetres off outer walls, keep cardboard off the floor, and fix damp patches, because damp is what makes a wall attractive in the first place.
Do not break open a mud tunnel and leave it. Do not spray a household insecticide into borer holes and assume that is finished; it is not, and it makes the timber messy to treat properly later.
When to call
Call when you find mud tunnels, fresh powder, hollow-sounding timber, or a joint that gives when you lean on it. Sequence it as treatment first, carpentry second — and use the gap between them to decide honestly what is worth rebuilding and what has already gone.

- How do I know if it is termites or borers?
- Termites build mud tunnels on walls and furniture backs, hollow out timber behind a paper-thin skin, and swarm with shed wings after the first rains. Borers leave neat round pinholes with fine powder like flour beneath them. Mud means termites; powder means borers.
- Should the carpenter come before or after pest treatment?
- After. Rebuilding a wardrobe while a colony is still active means the new timber gets eaten too, and any hardware or panel fitted in the meantime just gets in the treatment's way. Treat first, wait for the treatment to do its work, then repair or replace what is damaged.
- Can polish or paint stop termites?
- No. A finish slows moisture and looks good, but termites travel inside the timber and through mud tunnels, and paint on the surface does not touch them. Furniture polish is cosmetic. Anything sold as a termite cure in a tin is not a substitute for proper treatment.
