MCB keeps tripping? What each pattern means and what to check safely
An MCB that trips instantly, under one appliance, after an hour, in rain or at random points to a different fault each time. What each means and what to check.

An MCB trips for one of two reasons: too much current for too long (overload) or a sudden rush of current (a short circuit or a direct fault). It does not trip for no reason, and it is never fixed by holding the lever up or fitting a bigger one. The pattern of the tripping tells you most of what is wrong before anyone opens the board.
Here are the patterns we see most in Nellore homes, what each usually means, and what you can check without touching anything live.
Trips the instant you reset it
Everything on that circuit is off, you push the lever up, and it snaps straight back down. That is a short circuit or a dead fault: live touching neutral or earth somewhere — a chewed cable, water in a concealed conduit, a burnt socket, or an appliance with a failed heating element still plugged in.
Unplug every appliance on that circuit (unplug, not just switch off at the socket) and try once more. If it holds, plug things back one at a time until it trips; that appliance is the fault. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring or a fitting. Leave it off and book a visit. Do not keep resetting — each reset pushes fault current through the same damaged spot.
Trips when one particular appliance starts
The geyser, the AC, the iron, the mixie, the borewell motor — one thing switches on and the MCB drops. Either that appliance draws more than the circuit is rated for, or it has an internal fault: a geyser element leaking to earth, a motor with a shorted winding, a compressor that is stuck.
If it is a new problem with an old appliance, suspect the appliance. If it started when you added a second load to the same socket or circuit — an AC on a 6 A socket, a geyser and a washing machine sharing one 16 A line — it is overload, and the fix is a dedicated point, not a bigger MCB.
Trips after running a while, mostly in the evening
Holds for twenty minutes or an hour, then trips, usually on summer evenings when fans, fridge, AC and cooler are all on together. That is thermal overload: the total load on that MCB is close to its rating, and the bimetal strip inside heats slowly and releases.
Two local factors make this worse. In a 40°C room the MCB starts warm, so it trips at a slightly lower load than on a cool day. And evening voltage dips make motors draw more current for the same work. Check what is on that circuit and spread the load. If the board has only one or two MCBs for the whole house, that is a board upgrade, not a fault.
Trips in rain or when walls are damp
If the device tripping has a T or test button and is wider than the rest, it is an RCCB, not an MCB, and it is tripping on leakage — current finding its way to earth through a damp wall, a wet outdoor fitting or a faulty geyser. That is it doing its job. Do not bypass it; isolate outdoor and bathroom circuits one at a time to find which one holds it down.
Trips at random with little running
Nothing heavy on, and it still drops now and then. Usual causes: a loose connection at the MCB terminal or a socket heating and cooling, an ageing MCB whose mechanism has weakened, or an intermittent fault — a nail through a conduit, a rodent-damaged cable behind a cupboard.
Warmth on the board face, a discoloured MCB, or a faint hot-plastic smell near the board all point to a loose connection. That needs attention soon; loose terminals are how boards catch fire.
Main MCB, or several at once
If the main trips, or two or three go together, the fault is on the incoming side, a neutral problem, or a heavy short that the branch MCB did not clear in time. Switch off all branch MCBs, reset the main, then bring the branches up one by one and note which one takes it down.
What you can safely check
- Which MCB tripped, what is on it, and what was running. Write it down — it is the single most useful thing you can tell the technician.
- Unplug and isolate, reset once.
- Back of your hand near the board face to feel for warmth. Sniff for hot plastic.
- Look at the outside of sockets and switches on that circuit for brown marks or melting.
What you must not do: open the distribution board, swap the MCB for a higher rating, tape or wedge the lever, bridge it with wire, or touch any terminal with the main on.
When to call
Trips instantly with nothing plugged in; any burning smell or warm board; trips more than once a week without a clear cause; sparks at the board; or a single MCB feeding far more than it should. If the real problem is that the whole house hangs off one or two MCBs, the technician will say so; that is wiring work, not a part swap.
Questions people ask
- Can I fit a higher-rated MCB so it stops tripping?
- No. The MCB is sized to protect the wire behind it, not the appliance. A bigger MCB lets that wire carry more current than it can handle, and the insulation cooks inside the wall long before anything trips. Fix the load or the fault; if a circuit genuinely needs more capacity, it needs thicker wire too.
- Why does my MCB trip more in summer evenings?
- Two things stack up. The MCB sits in a hot board and starts closer to its thermal limit, and evening low voltage makes fridges, ACs and fans draw more current for the same work. Add a cooler and an iron to a circuit already near its rating and it lets go. Spreading the load usually cures it.
- Can the MCB itself be faulty?
- Yes. The mechanism and bimetal strip weaken with age, heat and repeated tripping, and salt air corrodes the contacts on the coastal side. An old MCB that trips at random with little running, feels warm, or has a soft lever is worth replacing — it is a small job on the rate card.
