Monsoon electrical safety in Nellore: damp walls, leaks, outdoor sockets
October to December brings seepage into conduits, tripping RCCBs, live pump starters and flooded floors. What to do before the rain, during it and after.

The north-east monsoon, October to December, is when Nellore's electrical problems surface. Rain finds its way into concealed conduits through cracked plaster, outdoor fittings fill with water, the borewell pump starter sits on a streaming wall, and in low-lying localities water comes into ground-floor rooms. The three things that follow are tripping RCCBs, tingles from switches and appliances, and the occasional serious shock.
Most of it is preventable with an hour of checking in September and a few firm rules during the rain.
Before the rain: a September check
- Outdoor fittings. Gate lights, compound wall lights, the terrace bulb, the pump starter, any socket on a balcony or verandah. Every one should have an intact weatherproof cover and a gasket. Cracked or missing covers get replaced now.
- Extension cords outside. Bring them in. A permanent outdoor need — a pump, a gate motor — deserves a permanent, covered, earthed point.
- Test the RCCB. Press the T button; it should trip instantly. If it does not, or if there is no RCCB, sort that before the rain, not during.
- Look at the walls. Damp patches, seepage stains or bubbling paint along the line of a concealed conduit, especially on the weather side of the house. That is where leakage will start.
- Ground-floor inverter and battery. On a trolley, off the floor; in localities that flood, higher than the water has come before.
- Earth pit. Find the cover, check the clamp is on and not rusted through. Rain helps earth resistance, but only if the pit is still connected.
During the rain: the rules
- Dry hands before touching any switch. Do not operate switches or plugs while standing in water.
- If a switch, tap, fridge or washing machine gives a tingle, switch that circuit off at the MCB and leave it off.
- If water enters a room, switch off the main before anyone wades in. Water and a live socket at skirting height is the dangerous combination.
- Keep the geyser off if its switchboard or the bathroom wall is visibly damp. Bathe with it off, switched off at the MCB, not just the switch.
- In thunderstorms, unplug the TV, set-top box, router and computer, and switch the inverter's mains input off if it has a switch. A lightning surge on the line is the commonest way these die.
- Switch the pump off at its MCB when not in use. Do not touch the starter with wet hands or bare feet.
When the RCCB trips in rain
It is doing its job. Reset it once. If it holds, something was briefly wet. If it trips again, switch off all the branch MCBs, reset the RCCB, then turn the branches on one at a time — the one that takes it down is the leaking circuit. Usual suspects, in order: the outdoor lights and pump, the bathroom and geyser, the kitchen, then a damp wall with a conduit in it. Leave that circuit off and book a visit.
If the RCCB trips with every branch off, the leak is at the board or the main cable, and that needs a technician without delay.
Damp walls and concealed wiring
Rain soaking through a cracked outer wall reaches the conduit inside it. Old PVC conduit joints are rarely watertight, and once water is inside, leakage follows. Signs: the RCCB trips on a circuit with no outdoor points, a switch plate on that wall feels damp or tingles, or the wall around a switch is discoloured. The fix is twofold: seal the wall outside, and have the circuit tested and, if the cable insulation has failed, rerun.
After flooding
If water has been in the house, even a few centimetres, treat every socket, switch box and the board it reached as contaminated. Keep the main off. Let it dry for days, not hours. Then have the affected circuits insulation-tested before use. Sockets at skirting level that have been under water are usually replaced, not dried. The inverter and battery, if they were submerged, are not to be switched on until checked.
Coastal homes
In Muthukur, Krishnapatnam and on the eastern side of the city, the monsoon adds salt spray to the damp. Outdoor fittings and the pump starter corrode from the inside; terminals green over. Covers matter more here, and a yearly clean of outdoor terminal boxes before the rain is worth the hour.
What it costs and when to call
A tingle from anything, an RCCB that will not hold, a pump starter with no cover or earth, or any room that has taken water. Questions people ask
- My RCCB trips every time it rains heavily. Should I get it removed?
- No. It is tripping because current is leaking to earth through something wet — a damp wall around a concealed conduit, an outdoor fitting, the pump starter, or a geyser. Removing the RCCB leaves the leak in place with nothing to catch it. Find which circuit holds it down and get that fixed; the RCCB is the messenger.
- Water came into the ground floor. Is it safe to switch the power back on once it drains?
- Not until someone has checked. Water leaves mud and salt inside sockets, switch boxes and the board, and damp conduits stay wet for days. Switching on can trip, spark or worse. Keep the main off, let everything dry, and have the affected circuits tested before they are used.
- How do I make the borewell pump starter safe in the rain?
- It needs a weatherproof enclosure, a proper earth and its own MCB, and the habit of switching it off at the MCB when the tank is full. A pump starter on a damp compound wall, with its cover missing and no earth, is one of the commonest sources of serious shocks in the district.
