Old wiring: the signs rewiring is due and what the job involves
Aluminium conductors, warm switchboards, a burning smell, two-pin sockets and fuse wire say wiring is at its limit. How to spot them and what rewiring takes.

Wiring does not last forever. PVC insulation hardens and cracks with heat and age, terminals loosen with thousands of heating and cooling cycles, and aluminium conductors — common in district homes built up to the 1990s — oxidise and work loose until they overheat. A house that was wired well thirty years ago can be a fire risk today without a single thing having been done wrong.
Nellore is hard on wiring. Summer attic temperatures cook the insulation, monsoon damp gets into concealed conduits, and salt air on the coastal side corrodes copper at every terminal and aluminium far faster. The signs below are the ones to look for.
Signs that rewiring is due
- Aluminium conductors. Dull silver wire at the terminals. Aluminium creeps, loosens and oxidises; the joints heat up. If your house has it, rewiring is not a question of if.
- Warm switch plates or sockets. Put the back of your hand on the plate (not the socket holes) after the circuit has been in use. Warmth means a loose or overloaded connection behind it.
- Brown marks, melting or discoloured plates. Heat has already been there.
- A hot-plastic or fishy smell near a board, switch or socket, with nothing obviously burning. That is overheated PVC. Switch off that circuit at the MCB and do not use it until it is checked.
- MCB trips often with no single appliance to blame, or fuse wire (a rewirable fuse) instead of MCBs at the board.
- Flicker or dimming when you switch something on, in one room or everywhere.
- Sparks or a crack when you plug in, or a socket that only works when the plug is wiggled.
- Two-pin sockets, no earth, no RCCB. Not wiring failure, but a sign the installation predates current practice and was never upgraded.
- Cloth, rubber or cracked casing-capping on surface runs; rodent damage in lofts and behind cupboards.
- Frequent bulb and LED driver failures on one circuit.
Any one of these is a reason for a check. Two or three together, in a house over twenty-five years old, usually mean rewiring rather than patching.
What you can check yourself
Look, smell and feel plates with the back of your hand. Note which rooms and which circuits. Check the board for fuse wire versus MCBs, and whether there is an RCCB. Count how many sockets are three-pin and whether a plug-in socket tester shows earth at them.
Do not open boards, do not pull a switch plate off to look, and do not paint over a discoloured one. If something smells hot or trips, switch it off at the MCB and leave it.
What rewiring involves
A proper job in a home here means:
- Copper conductors throughout, sized for the circuit: lighter wire for light circuits, heavier for socket circuits, and heavier again for AC and geyser points on their own dedicated lines.
- A separate earth conductor to every point, back to a tested earth.
- A new distribution board with an MCB per circuit and an RCCB.
- Three-pin sockets everywhere, 16 A sockets in the kitchen and for heavy appliances.
- Conduit — concealed in chased grooves, or surface casing-capping where the walls cannot be cut.
It is done a room or a floor at a time. The usual order is the board first, then the kitchen and geyser circuits, then the AC rooms, then the rest. A partial rewire — just the heavy-load circuits and the board — is a legitimate halfway house if the budget does not stretch, and removes most of the risk.

Repair or rewire
Replacing a burnt socket on an otherwise sound copper installation is a repair. Replacing the third burnt socket in two years, on aluminium wiring, behind a board with fuse wire, is throwing money at a house that needs rewiring. The honest rule: if the conductors are aluminium, or the insulation crumbles when touched, fixing individual points is buying time, not safety.
When to call
Any burning smell, any warm or discoloured plate, sparks at sockets, or an MCB that trips without a clear cause — soon. A house over twenty-five years old that has never been rewired, or any house with aluminium wiring — book an audit and plan it.
Questions people ask
- How do I know if my house has aluminium wiring?
- Look at a bare conductor end where it is safe to see one — at a loose socket the technician has opened, or a stripped cable end in the loft. Aluminium is dull silver; copper is reddish-brown. Houses built before the late 1990s in the district often have it. If you are unsure, do not open anything; a technician can confirm at a single switchboard in minutes.
- Can I rewire one room instead of the whole house?
- Yes, and it is a sensible way to do it. Start with the kitchen and the bathroom geyser circuit, where loads are heaviest and water is closest, then the room with the AC. Each room gets its own proper circuit back to the board, and the board itself is usually upgraded in the first round.
- Does rewiring mean breaking all the walls?
- Concealed rewiring means chasing grooves for conduit, which is dusty and needs plastering afterwards, but it is done room by room and the grooves are narrow. Where that is not possible — a rented home, a finished marble wall — surface casing-capping or PVC trunking gives you new, safe wiring without touching the plaster.
