RCCB and earthing: why many Nellore homes lack them and what that risks
An MCB protects wires; only an RCCB and a working earth protect people. Why older Nellore homes often have neither, how to tell, and what the fix involves.

An MCB protects your wiring. It does not protect you. The two things that stand between a person and a serious shock are a working earth — a low-resistance path from every metal appliance body to the ground — and an RCCB (also called ELCB or RCD) that senses current leaking out of the circuit and cuts the supply in milliseconds. A large number of homes in Nellore have one, the other, or neither, and most occupants do not know.

What each one does
Earthing gives leakage somewhere to go. If a geyser element cracks and its metal tank goes live, a good earth carries that current straight to ground, which either trips the MCB or, more usefully, trips the RCCB before anyone touches the tap. Without an earth, the tank simply sits live, waiting.
An RCCB compares the current going out on the live wire with the current coming back on the neutral. If they differ by more than 30 mA — meaning current is leaking to earth, through a wall, a wet fitting or a person — it trips. It will still trip if the leak path is you, limiting the shock to a fraction of a second; with a proper earth it trips before you become the path.
Why so many Nellore homes lack them
- Age of the build. Houses from the 1980s and 1990s were often wired two-wire: live and neutral, no earth conductor at all. Three-pin sockets were fitted later with the earth pin connected to nothing.
- The pit was never made, or has died. A proper earth is a pipe or plate buried in a damp, treated pit near the meter. Many builds skipped it or used a short rod. Those that were made dry out in the March–June heat, and in Muthukur, Krishnapatnam and the eastern side of the city salt air corrodes the clamp and pipe until continuity is gone.
- Add-ons and rentals. Upstairs portions, rear rooms and shop-to-house conversions wired by whoever was cheapest frequently have no earth and no RCCB.
- The RCCB was removed. An RCCB that kept tripping in the monsoon was seen as the nuisance rather than the leak it was reporting, and someone bridged it out.
- Earth tied to neutral. A shortcut some wiremen take so the socket tester lights up. It makes every appliance body live if the neutral ever breaks.
What the risk actually is
Most shocks in homes here come from three places: the geyser in the bathroom, where you are wet and barefoot; the washing machine and fridge body; and the borewell pump starter outside, usually on a damp wall. A tingle from any of these is not a quirk of the appliance — it is leakage with nowhere to go. With an earth and RCCB, the same fault is a trip and a phone call. Without them, it is a hospital visit.
Missing earth also quietly damages electronics: TVs, routers and inverter boards have nothing to dump surges into.
What you can check yourself
- Look at the distribution board. An RCCB is wider than an MCB and has a T (test) button. If there is no such device, you have none.
- Press the test button once a month. It should trip instantly; reset it. If it does not trip, it is faulty.
- Buy a plug-in socket tester and try it in the kitchen, bathroom and the fridge socket. It shows whether earth is present.
- Find the earth pit cover near the meter or compound wall. Cracked-dry soil, a rusted clamp or no visible connection are bad signs.
- Never remove the earth pin from a plug or use a two-pin adapter on a three-pin appliance.
Do not open the board, and do not test for earth with a neon screwdriver — it cannot tell you what you need to know.
What the fix involves
A technician measures earth resistance, checks continuity from the pit to every socket, and tests the RCCB trip time. Fixes run from re-wetting and recharging the pit with salt and charcoal, to a new pit and earth strip, to running an earth conductor to sockets that never had one, to fitting an RCCB in the board.

When to call
Any tingle from an appliance body; no RCCB on the board; an RCCB that does not trip on test; a geyser or pump with no earth; or a home older than twenty years where nobody can say when the earth was last checked. Until someone comes, keep the geyser off while bathing and the pump switched off at its MCB when not in use.
Questions people ask
- My board has MCBs. Isn't that enough protection?
- An MCB stops a wire from overheating. It does nothing for the small leakage current — a few milliamps through a person — that causes a fatal shock, because that current is far below its trip rating. An RCCB senses exactly that leak and cuts the supply in a fraction of a second. They do different jobs and a safe board has both.
- How do I know if my sockets are really earthed?
- A third pin on the socket proves nothing; the earth wire may end in the wall. A plug-in socket tester from any electrical shop lights up to show whether live, neutral and earth are present and in the right places. A tingle from a fridge, washing machine or geyser body is a sign the earth is missing or broken — stop using it and switch off at the MCB.
- Why does an earth pit need maintenance in Nellore?
- Earth resistance depends on damp soil around the electrode. Nellore's dry summer and sandy patches let the pit dry out and its resistance climb, and salt air on the coastal side corrodes the pipe and clamp. A pit that tested fine when built can be nearly useless a decade later unless it is watered and checked.
