Installing a geyser right: height, wall, wiring size and placement
What a correct geyser installation looks like: mounting height and wall, wire size and MCB by wattage, socket and drain-line placement, and the usual mistakes.

A geyser installed correctly sits on a solid wall, high, with a bracket anchored into brick or concrete, its own 16 A or 20 A point on wire sized for its wattage, a 30 mA RCCB in the circuit, a shut-off valve on the inlet, and a relief-valve drain line running open to a drain. That is the whole specification, and it is what the ₹699 installation covers. Most of the geyser faults we see in the first year are not geyser faults; they are one of those points skipped.
The wall and the bracket
A 25 L storage geyser weighs around 35 kg full. It hangs on two bolts for ten years. The wall must be solid brick or concrete; a hollow-block partition, a thin bathroom divider, or a wall that sounds hollow when tapped needs a through-bolted plate or a different wall. Anchors should be the size the bracket is drilled for, not whatever is in the toolbox, and both should bite into the wall, not into tile and plaster only.
Horizontal models exist for low ceilings and for mounting under a loft; use them as the manufacturer shows, not a vertical unit on its side.
Height and position
- Bottom of the unit above head height, top a hand's width below the ceiling so the cover comes off and the pipes bend without stress.
- Outlet higher than the highest hot tap it feeds, or hot water will not flow properly.
- Not directly above the bathing spot, and not where the shower sprays it every day.
- Close to the tap it serves. Every metre of pipe is hot water you pay for and wait for.
- If the bathroom is tiny, mounting the geyser in the passage or utility outside and piping in is better for everything — damp, access and safety.
Instant geysers go right at the point of use, as close to the tap as the hose allows, on the same wall rules.
Plumbing
- A ball valve on the cold inlet so the geyser can be isolated for service without shutting the whole house.
- The multifunction or relief valve on the inlet side, as the manual shows, with its drain outlet piped down to an open drain in a visible run.
- Flexible connectors of decent quality; the cheapest braided hoses split in two summers of Nellore heat.
- Teflon on the threads, no sealant compound on the valve seat.
- Fill the tank and run the hot tap until water flows steadily before the power is connected. This is not optional; an element switched on in an empty tank burns out in minutes.
On borewell water, an inline sediment filter on the inlet is a cheap addition that pays back in a longer element life.

All of them: through a 30 mA RCCB, with a tested earth at the socket. The socket or switch goes outside the splash zone, high on the wall, ideally on the dry side of the door. The technician should test earth continuity with a tester before switching on, and press the RCCB test button. If the house has no RCCB, an electrician fits one in the distribution board; it is not a thing to skip because the geyser "came with a plug".
Evening voltage dips in summer make a 4.5 kW unit draw more current on thin wire; that is the smell of hot plastic at the switch three months after installation.
The monsoon and the coast
Bathrooms are damp for three months of the year here and all year near the coast. Keep the terminal cover seated, the socket out of the splash line, and cable entries pointed down so water runs off rather than in. A drip loop in the cable before the socket costs nothing. On the coastal side, ask for stainless bracket hardware; plain steel anchors rust and stain the wall in a couple of years.
What a correct installation visit includes
Bracket drilled and anchored into a sound wall; unit mounted level; inlet valve, relief valve and drain line fitted; connections made and tested for leaks with the tank full; electrical connection made to a suitable point; earth tested; RCCB tested; thermostat set to 50–55°C; first heat cycle watched through to the lamp going off. Then you get shown the switch, the valve and the drain line. Extra wiring, a new point, chasing a wall or a long pipe run is quoted separately before it starts.
Mistakes that come back as faults
- Geyser on a 6 A light circuit: MCB trips every evening.
- Two-pin plug or no earth: tingle from the tap after the first element fault.
- Relief-valve outlet plugged because it dripped: nothing to protect the tank.
- Switched on before filling: new element gone in week one.
- Bracket in plaster only: the unit tilts, then the joints weep.
- Mounted over the bathing spot in a closed, damp bathroom: corrosion at the terminals by the second monsoon.
Each of these is cheaper to get right on the first day than to find on a repair visit later. Uninstallation of an old unit, with the plumbing capped safely, is ₹399 if you are replacing.
Questions people ask
- How high should a storage geyser be mounted?
- High enough that the bottom is above head height and the outlet is above the highest tap it feeds, usually with the top a hand's width below the ceiling to leave room for the pipes and the cover. It must not sit directly above where a person stands to bathe, and the wall must be solid — not a thin partition or hollow block.
- What wire and MCB does a geyser need?
- A 2 kW storage geyser: 16 A point, 2.5 sq mm copper, 16 A MCB. A 3 kW instant: the same, with no other heavy load on that circuit. A 4.5 kW instant: 4 sq mm copper and a 20 A point. Every geyser circuit should pass through a 30 mA RCCB. Extension boards and multi-plugs are never acceptable.
- Where should the relief-valve pipe go?
- Down to an open drain, in a visible run, without a tap or a plug on it. It will drip a little while heating and must be free to release water if the tank overheats. Routing it into a sealed pipe or a bucket, or bending it shut because it wets the floor, removes the geyser's last safety device.
