Geyser maintenance in Nellore: anode rod, tank flush and hard water

How often a storage geyser needs a flush and an anode check on Nellore's hard borewell water, what a service must include, and the signs that scale is winning.

A storage geyser in Nellore needs a tank flush once a year on municipal supply and every six to eight months if your water comes from a borewell, plus an anode rod check every year or two. That is the whole schedule. The reason it is shorter than the manual suggests is the water: a large part of the district, in the city and in the towns around it, runs on borewell supply, and borewell water here is hard. It leaves scale on the heating element and sediment at the bottom of the tank, and scale is what kills a geyser.

What scale actually does

The element is a metal tube sitting in the water. Hard water leaves a white crust on it every time it heats. That crust insulates the element from the water, so the geyser takes longer to reach temperature and uses more power doing it. The element itself runs hotter under the crust than it was designed to, and eventually fails — usually as "no hot water" or as a trip of the RCCB when water gets into the cracked sheath.

The sediment that falls off collects at the bottom of the tank, around the element and the drain, and traps heat and moisture against the tank wall, which is how the inside of a glass-lined tank starts to pit.

If your geyser took fifteen minutes to heat when new and now takes thirty, that is scale, not age.

The anode rod

Inside the tank is a magnesium rod, screwed into the top or the side. It is there to corrode instead of the tank. Hard water, and the salt air on the coastal side in Muthukur and Krishnapatnam, eat it faster. When it is worn to the core wire the tank has no protection and starts to rust from inside; by the time you see rusty water or a drip from the body, the tank is finished and the only fix is a new geyser.

A technician can pull the rod, look at it and tell you in a minute whether it has another year in it. Replacing it is a small part, charged at MRP and shown to you before it goes in. It is the single most cost-effective thing you can do for a storage geyser.

What a proper service includes

  • MCB off, water supply closed, tank drained through the drain valve.
  • Sediment flushed out until the water runs clear. On a geyser that has not been done for years this takes several buckets.
  • Element inspected and descaled, or replaced if the sheath is cracked or the crust will not come off.
  • Anode rod checked and replaced if thin.
  • Pressure-relief valve operated by hand to confirm it opens and reseats, and the drip line checked.
  • Thermostat checked and set back to 50–55°C.
  • Inlet and outlet fittings and the terminal block checked for seepage and corrosion.
  • Earth continuity at the socket checked with a tester.

If someone "serviced" your geyser in ten minutes without draining it, it was not a service.

Instant geysers

Instant geysers have no tank and no anode rod, so there is nothing to flush. They still scale — the small heating chamber is even more sensitive to it — and the sign is the same: water noticeably less hot at the same flow than it used to be. An annual look at the element and the inlet filter mesh is enough. On borewell water a small inline sediment filter on the inlet pays for itself.

Monsoon and the coastal side

October to December is when the bathroom is damp all day and the geyser's outer body, bracket and terminal box live in it. Salt air makes it worse on the eastern side of the city. What to watch for:

  • Rust streaks on the bracket or the bottom cover. Cosmetic at first; have it looked at before it reaches the pipe connections.
  • Green or white powder at the terminal block or on the plug pins. This is corrosion on the electrical connections and it is how a good earth quietly becomes a bad one.
  • A slight tingle from the tap or the geyser body. Switch off at the MCB and do not use it until it is checked.

Having the service visit in September or October, before the rain, means the connections are cleaned and tight when the damp arrives.

When it is a repair, not a service

No hot water at all, water dripping from the body or bottom cover, the MCB or RCCB tripping when the geyser is switched on, or a strong smell of hot plastic at the switch — those are faults. Book the specific issue rather than a service so the technician arrives with the right parts.

Questions people ask

How often should a storage geyser be flushed in Nellore?
Once a year on municipal water, every six to eight months on borewell water. The flush drains the sediment and scale that collects at the bottom of the tank around the element. If the water that comes out is cloudy white or gritty, you left it too long and should shorten the interval.
What is the anode rod and why does it matter?
A magnesium rod inside the tank that corrodes on purpose so the steel tank does not. It wears away faster in hard or salty water. Opening the drain valve on a small geyser is simple in principle, but the water is hot, the valve is often stiff or seized with scale, and the MCB must be off first. If you are not comfortable, leave it for the service visit. Never open the element cover or the terminal box yourself.
