Geyser repair or replace? How to decide by fault, age and water
Which geyser faults are worth repairing, the one that means a new unit, how hard water and age change the answer, and how to use the diagnosis visit to decide.

Repair a geyser when the fault is the element, thermostat, thermal cut-out, relief valve, anode rod, a gasket or a fitting — that is most faults, and the parts are modest. Replace it when the tank itself is leaking or rusting through, or when it is past about eight years on hard water and has already had one element and the tank is showing rust, because the next fault is the tank. The decision is mostly about the tank, not the age on the sticker.
Faults that are clearly repairable
- Heating element failed. The most common repair. A new element, fitted with a new gasket, and the geyser is as good as it was. Descale the tank at the same time or the new one goes the same way.
- Thermostat or thermal cut-out. Small parts, quick fit, ₹399 for diagnosis and labour plus the part at MRP.
- Relief valve dripping. Replace the valve. Cheap and important.
- Anode rod worn. Replace before the tank suffers. This is the repair that prevents the replacement.
- Leak at a fitting or the element flange. New fitting or gasket, ₹350 plus the part.
- Control PCB on a digital geyser. Repairable, but the board is the expensive part on these, so ask for the quote before saying yes.
On an instant geyser, the element and the flow switch are the usual failures and both are worth doing if the unit is under five or six years old.
The one fault that means replace
Water coming from the tank body or from the bottom cover as rusty water, with no loose fitting to explain it, means the tank has corroded through. A glass-lined steel tank cannot be relined; a stainless tank with a pinhole cannot be reliably welded with an element and live terminals a hand's width away. Patching compounds last weeks. This is a new geyser, and the sooner the better — a tank leak usually starts as a drip and ends as a bathroom full of water on a day you are out.
The warning signs before the leak: rusty or brown hot water first thing in the morning, rust streaks at the bottom cover, and a rumbling tank that has never been flushed.
Age, water and the hidden cost
A storage geyser on well-maintained municipal water is good for eight to ten years. On Nellore's borewell water without a flush or an anode change it is nearer five to seven, and the pattern is predictable: the element burns out once, gets replaced, and two years later the tank leaks because the anode was gone by year three.
So when a five-year-old geyser on hard water needs an element, the honest question is: has the anode ever been checked? If not, ask the technician to look at it and at the inside of the tank through the element hole while the element is out. Clean tank, anode replaced, new element: good for years. Heavily pitted tank: fit the element if you like, but start pricing a replacement.
The efficiency argument, honestly
A new geyser is more efficient mostly because its tank is clean and its insulation is new, not because of dramatic technology changes. A ten-year-old unit, flushed, with a fresh element and the thermostat at 50–55°C, is not far behind a new one in running cost. Replace for a leaking tank, for repeated faults, or because the capacity was wrong for the family — not for a promise of a lower bill.

Using the visit to decide
Book the fault you see — no hot water, leaking, thermostat — and the technician diagnoses it for ₹399 or ₹350 and quotes parts at MRP before touching anything. If the answer is "the tank", you pay the visit and get a clear reason to buy new instead of a patch that fails in the monsoon. If you go that way, the old unit's removal and plumbing cap-off is ₹399, and a new installation — bracket, plumbing and electrical — is ₹699.
If you replace: three things to do differently
- Choose the size for the family, not the biggest the shop has; standby loss on a 25 L unit used by one person is wasted power every day.
- Have the installation include an RCCB check and the right wire size. Most "new geyser already faulty" calls are old wiring under a new unit.
- Put the flush and anode check in your calendar from year one. That is the whole difference between seven years and twelve.
Questions people ask
- Can a leaking geyser tank be repaired?
- No, not in any way that lasts. A storage tank is glass-lined steel or thin stainless; once it has corroded through, patching or welding the body fails quickly and is not safe with water and electricity sharing the unit. Every other leak — fittings, valve, element gasket — is repairable. A tank leak means a new geyser.
- How long should a storage geyser last in Nellore?
- Roughly eight to ten years with an annual flush and an anode rod replaced when worn. On hard borewell water with no maintenance, five to seven is more realistic because scale burns out elements and the anode is eaten faster. An instant geyser tends to last less because its small chamber scales sooner.
- Is it worth repairing a geyser that is out of warranty?
- Usually yes, if the tank is sound. An element, thermostat, relief valve or anode rod is a modest part at MRP on top of ₹399 or ₹350 labour, and the repair itself carries a 30-day written warranty.
