Geyser stopped working? Safe checks to do before calling a technician

Seven things you can safely check on a geyser that stopped heating, leaks or trips — switch, socket, MCB, thermostat knob, valve drip — and what not to touch.

Before you book a geyser repair, there are about seven things you can check safely and in ten minutes, and they sort out a fair share of "no hot water" calls on the spot — a switch someone left off, a tripped MCB, a knob turned down. Everything else lives behind the cover or in the wiring, and the line is simple: you can touch the switch, the socket, the MCB, the thermostat knob and the taps. You do not open the cover, the terminal box or the element flange, and you do not touch anything while the geyser is wet or while you are.

First: does it have power?

  1. The wall switch. Obvious, but check it. Many bathrooms have two switches side by side and the wrong one gets pressed in the dark.
  2. The indicator lamp. On a storage geyser the heating lamp should come on and go off once the water is hot. Lamp on and water hot: no fault. Lamp off: no power to the geyser. Lamp on and water cold after half an hour: a fault inside.
  3. The socket. If the geyser runs from a plug, pull it out (switch off first) and look at the pins. Brown or black marks, a melted patch, or a loose earth pin mean the socket is the problem and it is an electrician's job before the geyser goes back on.
  4. The MCB. Go to the distribution board and look for the breaker on that circuit. If it is down, switch the geyser off at its own switch, reset the MCB once, and switch the geyser on. Holds: carry on. Trips again: leave it off and book it.

If it was the RCCB — the wider switch with a test button — that tripped, do not keep resetting it. That is an earth leakage and it is almost always the element.

Second: the settings

  1. The thermostat knob. If it is on the outside, check nobody has turned it down. Set it around the middle (roughly 50–55°C on a marked dial) and give it half an hour. If the knob is inside the cover, leave it.
  2. Think about how long it took. A 15 L geyser that used to be ready in fifteen minutes and now takes forty has not failed; it has scaled. That is a service, not an emergency.

Third: where is the water coming from?

  1. Trace the drip. Put a dry cloth under the geyser and look after an hour.
  • From the inlet or outlet pipe joints: a fitting. Do not tighten it yourself with the tank full and hot; note it for the plumber or technician.
  • From the small pipe on the relief valve, only while heating: normal.
  • From the relief valve steadily, or when the geyser is cold: the valve. Book it.
  • From the bottom cover, or rusty water: the tank or the element seal. Switch off at the MCB and close the inlet tap. Book it.

Any water near the switch or plug is MCB off first, then everything else.

Things that are never a DIY job

  • Opening the cover, the terminal box or the element flange. Live terminals sit a finger's width from the water connections.
  • Bypassing the RCCB or taping up an MCB so it stays on.
  • Replacing the relief valve or plugging its outlet because it drips.
  • "Checking for a shock" by touching the body or the tap. If you felt a tingle once, that is the check. Switch off at the MCB and book it the same day.
  • Running the geyser with the tank empty to "test the element". Dry-firing destroys an element in minutes.
  • Working on a gas geyser's gas side — regulator, hose, burner — beyond closing the cylinder valve.

What to note before you book

Having these ready makes the visit shorter and cheaper:

  • Storage, instant or gas; capacity in litres; rough age.
  • What happened: no heat, lukewarm, slow, leak (and from where), trip (MCB or RCCB, once or every time), noise, smell, tingle.
  • Whether it started suddenly or drifted over months.
  • Whether it is on borewell or municipal water.
  • Whether the bathroom has an RCCB and whether the socket has a proper earth pin — if you do not know, say so.

Which job to book

"No hot water" and "thermostat fault" are both ₹399 for diagnosis and standard labour; "water leaking" is ₹350. Parts are charged at MRP and shown to you before fitting. If you are not sure which, pick the closest — the technician diagnoses on the spot and the quote comes before any work starts.

When to switch off and wait

Do not use the geyser at all until it is seen if: it trips the RCCB, you felt a tingle, water is coming from the body rather than a fitting, there is a burning smell at the switch, or it is a gas geyser and anyone felt dizzy or had a headache in the bathroom. Cold water for a day is a small price; all five of those are the faults that hurt people.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to reset the MCB if the geyser tripped it?
Once, yes. Switch the geyser off at its own switch first, reset the MCB, then switch the geyser on. If it trips again, or if it was the RCCB that tripped, leave it off and book a repair. Repeated resetting to see if it holds is the one thing that turns a minor fault into a dangerous one.
Can I open the cover to press the reset button?
If your geyser has an external reset, the manual will show it and it is fine to press once after the MCB is off. On most geysers the thermal cut-out is behind the cover next to live terminals, and that cover should stay on. A technician has it off and tested in a few minutes.
The water is lukewarm, not cold. Is that still a fault?
Check the thermostat knob first — someone may have turned it down. Then think about whether heating time has stretched over months; if so it is scale, and a flush will fix it. If it went lukewarm suddenly with the knob unchanged, the thermostat or one of two elements has failed and it is worth a visit.
