Geyser safety: earthing, the RCCB, the relief valve and what never to do

The three things that make a geyser safe — a real earth, a working RCCB and a free relief valve — how to check each, and the shortcuts that cause shocks.

An electric geyser is safe when three things are true: the body is properly earthed, the circuit has a working RCCB, and the pressure-relief valve is free to open. If any one of those is missing, a single failed element — the most common geyser fault there is — can put mains voltage in the bath water or let an overheating tank build pressure it was never built for. Here is how to know where you stand, and the short list of things never to do.

Earthing: the one most Nellore homes get wrong

The geyser's third pin connects its metal body and the water inside to earth. If the element sheath cracks and current leaks, the earth carries it away and the MCB trips. Without an earth, that current has nowhere to go until you touch the tap.

Older houses in the district, and a lot of rented ones, have a three-pin socket with nothing connected to the earth terminal, or an earth wire that was connected once and has since corroded at the pit. Salt air on the coastal side and wet monsoon months make that worse. You cannot see this from the bathroom.

What you can do:

  • Ask for the earth to be tested with a tester at the geyser socket during any service or installation visit. It takes a minute.
  • Look at the plug: a missing or bent earth pin, or a two-pin plug on a geyser, is a fault on its own.
  • Treat a tingle from the tap, the geyser body or the shower as proof the earth has failed. MCB off, do not use, book it that day.

The RCCB

The RCCB (often called ELCB) is the wide switch in the distribution board with a test button. It compares current going out with current coming back and trips in a fraction of a second if some is leaking — through a cracked element, damp wiring, or a person. For a bathroom it should be the 30 mA type.

Press the test button once every month or two. It should trip at once; reset it. If it does not trip, it is not protecting you, and that is an electrician visit before the geyser is used again.

When the RCCB trips with the geyser, the RCCB is the messenger. Do not bypass it, tape it, or move the geyser to a socket on a different circuit to get round it.

The relief valve

A storage geyser is a sealed tank. As water heats it expands, and if the thermostat sticks on, it keeps heating. The relief valve, on the inlet side, opens at a set pressure and lets water out through a small outlet pipe. It is the last line before a tank splits.

Keep the outlet pipe open, pointed at a drain, and visible so you notice a change in drip. Lift the lever or turn the knob briefly every few months — water should come out and stop when you release it. If it is seized, or drips constantly, replace it. Never plug it.

Thermostat and cut-out

Set the thermostat at 50–55°C. Hotter is not more hot water, it is more scale and a scald risk at the tap for children. The thermal cut-out behind the cover trips if the tank overheats; if it trips more than once, the thermostat is sticking and needs replacing, not resetting.

Wiring and the MCB

A 2 kW storage geyser on a 16 A socket with 2.5 sq mm copper wire is fine. A 3 kW instant geyser on the same is fine. A 4.5 kW instant geyser needs 4 sq mm wire and a 20 A point — on thin wire it heats the wiring every evening, and the smell of hot plastic at the switch is the warning. Never run a geyser from an extension board, a multi-plug, or an inverter.

What never to do

  • Never open the cover, terminal box or element flange yourself. Live terminals sit next to the water connections.
  • Never bypass or tape up the RCCB or MCB because it keeps tripping.
  • Never plug, cap or bend shut the relief-valve outlet.
  • Never switch on a newly installed or just-drained geyser before the tank is full and water runs from the hot tap. Dry-firing burns the element in minutes and can crack the tank lining.
  • Never use a two-pin plug, cut the earth pin off, or "borrow" the earth from the neutral.
  • Never touch the geyser, switch or plug with wet hands or while standing in water.
  • Never leave a geyser with a burning smell or a tingle in use "until the weekend".
  • Never let a child operate the hot tap on a geyser set above 55°C.

A safe-geyser checklist for the year

None of these takes more than a few minutes. The ones in the first row you do yourself; the rest are worth asking for by name when the technician is there.

Questions people ask

Why does the geyser need earthing if it has an RCCB?
They do different jobs. Earthing gives leaking current a safe path so the body and the water do not become live, and it is what makes the MCB trip fast on a short. The RCCB notices current leaking anywhere and cuts off in milliseconds. With only one of them, a failed element can still give you a shock from the tap. You want both.
Should I switch the geyser off before bathing?
It is a sensible habit, especially in older houses where the earth is doubtful. A healthy geyser with a good earth and an RCCB is safe running. But switching off costs you nothing on a storage geyser — the water stays hot — and removes the one risk that matters if the earth has quietly failed. On an instant geyser you cannot, which is why its wiring must be right.
Is it normal for the safety valve to drip?
A few drops from its outlet while the water is heating is normal expansion. A steady drip, or a flow when the geyser is cold, means the valve or the inlet pressure needs attention. What is never acceptable is plugging, capping or bending the outlet shut because it drips — that valve is what stops an overheating tank from bursting.
