Power cuts, low voltage and the fridge compressor: a Nellore guide

What evening voltage dips, cuts and quick restarts do to a fridge compressor, whether you need a stabiliser, what to do in a cut, and how long food keeps.

The Nellore electricity supply is the single biggest influence on how long a refrigerator lasts here. Not the heat — the compressor can handle heat if it is allowed to run steadily. What hurts it is the evening voltage dip that leaves it too weak to start, the cut that stops it mid-cycle, and the restart thirty seconds later against full pressure. Do that a few hundred times over a summer and the compressor that should have lasted fifteen years lasts eight.

What a cut does to the compressor

A fridge compressor is a small pump with a motor. When it stops, the pressure on its two sides is unequal; it takes a few minutes for them to settle. A compressor asked to start before that has to push against the high side with a motor that draws several times its running current at start. On a healthy supply it manages. On a low voltage — the classic 7 pm dip when every AC in the street switches on — it cannot turn, the overload protector trips, it cools and tries again. That is the click-pause-click you hear.

Every failed start heats the windings. Enough of them and the start relay or overload fails first (cheap parts), then the compressor itself (not cheap). A quick restart after a cut is the same problem, and Nellore cuts often come in clusters — off, on, off again in a minute — which is the worst pattern.

The stabiliser question

  • Older fridge (roughly pre-2015), any type: yes, a stabiliser with a time-delay restart. The delay — usually a few minutes — is the important part; it guarantees the compressor never sees a quick restart.
  • Newer fridge with a wide voltage range on the label (many say something like 130–290 V): the fridge's own electronics tolerate dips and it often has a built-in restart delay. A stabiliser is optional, and a cheap one with no delay adds nothing. If the label does not say, treat it as older.
  • Inverter compressor fridge: same — check the label. Inverter fridges handle low voltage better than fixed-speed ones because they do not have the big start surge.
  • Any fridge on a locality with obvious flicker and dips: a stabiliser is worth it regardless.

Buy the rating by the fridge's wattage with margin — the label on the back gives it. Do not share a stabiliser between the fridge and anything else.

When the power goes: what to do

  1. Switch the fridge off at the socket, or the stabiliser off, as soon as a cut starts. This protects it from the on-off-on cluster and the low-voltage return. Do the same if lights are flickering badly.
  2. Keep the doors shut. Every opening costs cold you cannot replace. Decide what you need before you open, get it all, close.
  3. When the power returns, wait five minutes and look at the lights. Steady and normal brightness? Switch the fridge back on. Dim or flickering? Wait.
  4. If it clicks and hums without starting, switch it off again, wait ten minutes, try once more. Still clicking with steady lights? Leave it off and book; the relay or overload is likely gone.

How long food keeps

Rough rules, for a fridge kept closed:

  • The fridge section holds a safe cold for a few hours. In a 35°C kitchen, less than in a 28°C one. After that, cooked rice, curries, milk and cut fruit are the first to go.
  • A full freezer holds for a day or more; a half-full one for around half that. Full is better: frozen food keeps itself cold. Group items together in one block, and fill gaps with bottles of water frozen in advance.
  • Long cuts: a frozen bottle or two moved from freezer to fridge section buys the fridge hours. An ice box for the most perishable items if the cut is going to run through the night.

When the power returns, judge by what you find, not the clock. Frozen items that still have ice crystals are fine to keep frozen. Anything fully thawed and warm should not be refrozen. Meat, fish and milk that have been warm for hours — let them go; the fridge repair is cheaper than the alternative.

Earthing and the tingle

If the fridge door or cabinet ever gives a tingle, that is an earth fault — either the socket is not earthed or something inside has leaked current to the cabinet. Switch off at the MCB and have an electrician check the socket before the fridge is plugged in again. Never run a fridge from an extension board shared with other heavy loads, or from a two-pin adaptor.

Signs the supply has already done damage

  • Clicking on and off at start, most evenings, even with steady lights.
  • A loud, rough hum at start that settles after a few seconds.
  • The fridge trips its own stabiliser repeatedly.
  • Cooling that is fine at night and weak by evening — the compressor is starting late or stalling during the dip.

Questions people ask

Does a fridge need a stabiliser in Nellore?
If your locality gets evening dips, regular cuts or flickering, yes — one with a time-delay restart. Many newer fridges are rated for a wide voltage range and say so on the label, and for those a stabiliser is less essential. For an older fridge, or one that clicks and struggles to start after a cut, it is the cheapest protection for the compressor.
Why does my fridge click and hum after the power comes back?
The compressor is trying to start against pressure that has not equalised, or on a voltage that is too low to get it turning. The overload protector cuts it off, it cools, it tries again. A few attempts are normal; minutes of clicking are not. Switch off at the socket, wait ten minutes, try again when the lights look steady.
How long does food stay safe in a power cut?
With the doors kept shut, a fridge holds a safe temperature for a few hours and a full freezer for a day or more; a half-empty freezer for less. Keep the doors closed, group frozen items together, and judge by temperature and ice crystals when the power returns rather than by the clock alone.
