Fridge not working? Safe checks before you call a technician

Eight things you can safely check when a refrigerator goes warm, noisy or dead, what you must never open or touch, and the point at which to book a repair.

Before you book anyone, there is a short list of things worth checking on a refrigerator that has gone warm, started a new noise, or stopped altogether. Roughly half the fridge calls we attend in Nellore turn out to be one of these. None of them needs tools, and none involves opening anything sealed.

The rule for everything below: if you need to touch anything electrical, switch off at the socket first. If the plug or socket is hot, or there is any burning smell, switch off at the MCB and leave it off.

1. Is it actually getting power?

Obvious, but it catches people. Check the socket switch, check the plug is fully in, and try a phone charger in the same socket. If the socket is dead, look at the MCB — a tripped breaker means an electrical fault, possibly elsewhere in the house, and that is an electrician visit rather than a fridge repair.

A fridge with an inside light but no hum from the back has power; the problem is the compressor circuit. One with no light and no hum most likely has no supply.

2. Is the compressor running?

Put a hand on the back lower panel or listen. A steady low hum means the compressor is running. Silence with the thermostat turned up means it is not being told to, or cannot start. A click every minute or so followed by silence means the start relay or overload is cutting it out — switch off at the socket and book; there is no home fix and running it damages the compressor.

3. The thermostat and the "holiday" switch

Check the dial has not been nudged to off or minimum while cleaning, and that no eco or holiday mode has been selected on a digital panel. Children and wiping cloths do both.

4. The door and the gasket

Close the door on a strip of paper at several points. If it slides out freely anywhere, warm air has been getting in, which explains both weak cooling and fast frost. Look for a container or tray holding the door off the seal. Wipe the gasket with warm soapy water; a sticky gasket can hold the door slightly open.

If the door does not swing shut on its own from half open, the fridge is not level. Turn the front feet until it does.

5. Airflow round the cabinet

Pull the fridge ten centimetres from the wall, take anything off the top, and make sure nothing is stacked against the sides. Warm sides on a newer fridge are normal — the condenser is in the walls — but very hot sides with weak cooling mean it cannot dump heat. Brush dust off the back grid if there is one. In a Nellore summer this alone can be the difference.

6. Airflow inside

Look at the vents at the back of the fridge section. If a packet is jammed against them, or the shelves are packed solid, cold air cannot circulate. In a frost-free fridge, a freezer that is cold while the fridge below is warm points to either a blocked vent or the small evaporator fan — the fan is a technician job, the vent is yours.

7. Ice where it should not be

Open the freezer. On a frost-free model, a thick sheet of ice on the back wall means the defrost cycle has failed or the door has been leaking air. You can defrost it manually — switch off, doors open, towels down, a few hours — and it will cool properly again for a while. If the ice is back within a week, the defrost heater, timer or sensor needs a technician.

8. Water on the floor

Check whether it is coming from inside the fridge (blocked drain hole at the back of the compartment — clear with a cotton bud) or from the front of the door (condensation or a tired gasket, very common from October to December). Water from under the back is usually the drain pan knocked out of place.

What you must not do

  • Do not open the sealed system. No pipe, no valve, no "top-up" from a can. The refrigerant in many recent fridges (R600a) is flammable; the older R134a is not, but either way a home attempt ends the fridge. There is no user-serviceable gas on a refrigerator.
  • Do not chip ice off a freezer wall with a knife or screwdriver. One puncture of the evaporator and the fridge is finished. Warm water and patience only.
  • Do not bypass the relay, overload or thermostat to "test" the compressor. The protection is there because the compressor draws a heavy current at start.
  • Do not lay the fridge on its side to look underneath. Oil moves into the refrigerant lines.
  • Do not run the fridge from an extension board shared with other heavy loads, or without earthing. A tingle from the door handle is an earth fault — switch off at the MCB.

When to stop checking and book

If the compressor runs but cooling is weak after you have cleaned the condenser, checked the gasket and the airflow; if the compressor will not run at all with power present; if it clicks on and off; if frost returns within a week of a manual defrost; if the noise is a rough, loud hum rather than a rattle. Those are parts or diagnosis jobs. Questions people ask

Can I check the gas level in my fridge myself?
No, and you should not try. The refrigerant circuit is sealed and brazed; there is no valve for a home check. Newer fridges use R600a, which is flammable. Gas is the last thing a technician checks, after airflow, defrost and electricals, and only with gauges. Anything described online as a home gas check is guesswork.
Is it safe to pull the fridge out and look at the back?
Yes, once it is switched off at the socket. Tilt it gently from the front, do not drag it by the door, and keep it upright — laying a fridge down moves compressor oil into the wrong place. Look, brush dust off the condenser grid, check the plug and the drain pan. Do not loosen any pipe or wire.
How long should I wait after switching it back on?
Give it five minutes before plugging back in so pressure inside the compressor can equalise, and then a few hours before judging the cooling. A warm fridge that has been off for a while can take most of a day to settle fully, especially in summer with a full load inside.
