Keeping a fridge cold in a 42°C Nellore summer, and why it runs non-stop

Why a refrigerator runs continuously from April to June in Nellore, what that does to the compressor, and the settings, placement and habits that keep it cold.

From April to June, a Nellore kitchen can sit at 35°C all afternoon and barely drop at night. A fridge trying to hold 4°C inside has to pump heat into air that is already hot, through a condenser that was designed for a 25°C room. So it runs far longer — that is physics, not a fault. The job in summer is to make shedding heat as easy as possible for it, so "runs longer" does not become "runs continuously, ices up, and the compressor gives out in the hottest week of the year."

Why it runs non-stop

A fridge cools by moving heat from inside to the condenser — the black grid at the back on older models, the warm side walls on newer ones — and letting the room air carry it away. The hotter the room and the dirtier or more enclosed the condenser, the slower the heat leaves, and the longer the compressor must run to get the inside down to the set point.

Three things turn "longer" into "never stops":

  1. The condenser cannot breathe. Dust on the grid, the fridge pushed flat against a wall, things stacked on top and against the sides. In summer this is the first thing to fix and the one that makes the biggest difference.
  2. Warm air keeps getting in. A tired gasket, a door opened twenty times an afternoon for cold water, a pot of hot sambar put straight in.
  3. The dial is at maximum. People turn it up when cooling feels weak. The compressor then chases a set point it cannot reach in a 35°C room, runs without a break, and the evaporator ices over, which makes cooling worse — the opposite of what you wanted.

Running continuously for days heats the compressor windings, dries the oil, and makes the evening voltage dip that much more likely to stall it. That is why so many compressor failures in Nellore arrive in May.

The summer checklist

Do these in March, before it gets bad.

  • Clean the condenser. Switch off at the socket, pull the fridge out, brush or vacuum the grid gently. No grid? Wipe the sides and keep them clear. Repeat in May if the kitchen is dusty.
  • Make the gap. Ten centimetres behind, five each side, and nothing on top. If the fridge lives in an alcove, it needs air in at the bottom and out at the top — a closed alcove is an oven for a condenser.
  • Get it off the hot wall. A fridge against a west-facing outer wall, or next to the stove, is fighting two heat sources. Moving it a metre can be worth more than any repair.
  • Check the gasket with the paper test and clean it. A gasket that leaks in February leaks more in May because the cabinet expands and the rubber softens.
  • Set the dial sensibly. One step colder than winter. On a digital panel, 3–4°C fridge and around −18°C freezer. Not maximum.

Habits that help more than you expect

  • Fill bottles in one go. Every door opening in a 35°C kitchen dumps cold air and pulls in hot, humid air. Take out what you need at once, rather than in five visits.
  • Cool food before it goes in. A hot pot raises the fridge temperature for an hour and makes the compressor run the whole time. Let it come to room temperature first — covered, and not for long on a hot day.
  • Keep it reasonably full, not crammed. A full fridge holds its cold better through door openings and cuts, but air must still move: leave a hand's width in front of the vents at the back.
  • Do not block the freezer vents with ice trays in frost-free models; that is where cold air is pushed down to the fridge section.
  • Use the freezer for water if the household drinks a lot of chilled water — freezer cold is cheaper to hold than fridge cold opened constantly, and a frozen bottle in the fridge section during a cut helps.

If it has already given up

If the fridge is warm, the compressor is hot and silent, or it clicks every minute, switch off at the socket and leave the door shut. Questions people ask

Is it normal for the fridge to run all day in May?
Running much longer, yes. Never switching off at all for days, with the sides very hot and the inside only just cold, is a warning. It means the fridge cannot shed heat fast enough — a dusty condenser, no gap round the cabinet, a tired gasket, or the dial turned to maximum. Fix those before assuming a fault.
Should I turn the thermostat to maximum in summer?
No. Maximum tells the compressor to chase a temperature it cannot reach in a hot kitchen, so it never stops, ices the coil and wears out. Go one step colder than your winter setting, keep the door shut, and fix airflow round the fridge. That keeps milk cold for less than maximum ever will.
Why does my fridge freezer sweat on the outside in summer?
Condensation on the outside of a cold surface in humid air. It is normal on a very humid day and harmless if it dries. If one spot on the cabinet is always wet, or the door face is always wet, the gasket there is leaking cold or the insulation behind that spot has gone — worth a technician look.
