Installing a washing machine: levelling, hoses, socket and placement

How to install a washing machine so it does not walk, leak or trip the MCB: transit bolts, levelling, hose heights, the right socket, and where to put it.

A washing machine installed in twenty careless minutes will be noisy, will walk, may leak at the back, and will wear its bearings and suspension years early. The same machine installed properly is quiet and stays where it is put. The job is not difficult, but every step matters: bolts out, feet level, hoses at the right height, a proper socket, and a sensible spot.

Here is what a proper installation covers, whether you do it yourself or watch someone else do it.

Before it goes in: the spot

  • Firm, level floor. Tiled concrete is ideal. Not a wooden platform, not a raised metal trolley for a front loader, not a floor that slopes sharply to a drain without packing the feet.
  • Under a roof. Not on an open balcony where the monsoon blows in, and out of direct afternoon sun, which cooks the plastic panel and fades the body in a Nellore summer. A covered wash area or bathroom is right. On the coastal side, indoors is worth the inconvenience; salt air rusts seams.
  • A tap within hose reach. The inlet hose supplied is usually short. Extending it with a joint is one more place to leak; better to position the machine near the tap, or have a plumber fit a tap where the machine goes.
  • A drain at the right height. A standpipe, a sink, or a floor drain with a hook for the hose. See the heights below.
  • Clearance. A hand's width behind for hoses, and enough in front for the door to open fully on a front loader.
  • Not under a dripping AC outdoor unit, and not where the geyser overflow runs.

The steps

  1. Transit bolts out. On a front loader there are three or four long bolts in the back panel that lock the drum for shipping. Remove them with the spanner in the box, fit the plastic caps that came with the machine, and keep the bolts for the next move. Running with them in destroys the suspension.
  2. Position and level. Each foot screws in and out; adjust until a spirit level across the top reads level front-to-back and side-to-side, and the machine does not rock when you push on opposite corners. Tighten the locknuts on the feet so they do not unwind with vibration.
  3. Inlet hose. Check both ends have their rubber washers. Hand-tight at the tap, hand-tight at the machine, then a quarter turn more; no spanner. Open the tap fully and look for drips before moving on. The small mesh inside the machine's inlet stays in; it catches borewell grit.
  4. Drain hose. The hose should rise to between 60 and 100 cm (roughly waist height) before it goes into the standpipe or over the sink edge, held by the plastic U-bend hook supplied. Push it no more than a hand's length into the pipe, and do not seal the pipe around it; it needs an air gap. Do not extend it with a second hose lying flat across the floor.
  5. Socket. A dedicated three-pin socket with a working earth, at splash-safe height, rated for the machine: a front loader with a heater needs a 16 A point. No extension boards, no two-pin adaptors. If the house has old wiring or the socket is doubtful, have an electrician check the earth before the first wash.
  6. Test run. Empty drum, short programme. Watch the inlet connections while it fills, the drain hose while it drains, and feel for walking on the spin. Then load it.

Getting the level right

Levelling is where most DIY installations fall short. A machine that rocks even slightly on one corner will walk on a spin and hammer its suspension. After the first week, and again after any heavy unbalanced load, push on opposite corners; if it moves, adjust. Keep the machine's feet on the floor, not on rubber pads unless the pads are the dense anti-vibration type; soft pads let the machine move more, not less.

Semi-automatic and top loader notes

A semi-automatic has no transit bolts and no fixed plumbing; it needs a level spot, a tap or hose for filling, and a drain hose that runs downhill to a floor drain. Keep the drain hose short and unkinked. A top loader needs the same levelling care as a front loader, and clearance above to open the lid and reach the lint filter.

What a technician does that you may not

If you book a professional installation or a first service, the technician also checks the supply voltage at the socket, confirms the earth, looks at the tap washer and stopcock, sets the drain height against the model's manual, and runs a full cycle to watch for leaks and imbalance. For a machine moved between houses, the same visit is the right time to fit the transit bolts for the move and take them out at the other end.

Signs the installation needs correcting

  • Thumps and walking on spin: level and bolts.
  • Water at the back: hose washers or the tap.
  • Machine keeps filling, or drains and refills: drain hose too low.
  • Drum fills with drain water, or the floor drain overflows: hose too deep in the pipe, or the pipe is blocked.
  • MCB trips on a hot wash: socket under-rated, or a heater issue.

The first four are an adjustment. The last is worth a visit before it becomes a fault.

Questions people ask

My new front loader bangs and walks across the floor on spin. What is wrong?
Almost always the transit bolts were left in the back, or the feet were not levelled. The bolts lock the drum for transport and must come out before the first wash. Remove them, fit the blanking caps, then level the machine so it does not rock on any corner. If it still walks, the floor is not firm enough.
How high should the drain hose go?
The hose should rise to roughly waist height, about 60 to 100 cm, before going into the standpipe or over the sink edge, and go no more than a hand's length into the pipe. Too low, and the machine siphons out its own water and keeps refilling; too deep in the pipe, and the drain backs up into the drum.
Can the machine sit on a stand or trolley?
A top loader or semi-automatic can sit on a rigid, level stand. A front loader is better on the floor; its spin speed is high and a stand that flexes even slightly turns into a drum. If you must raise it for drainage, use a solid masonry plinth rather than a metal trolley with wheels.
